I am going to buy a new scope for field target and i was wondering what is the best variable power scope under the 300 dollars.

I have seen sources for the sunshade for the Big Nikko but I can’t find a single one right now to give you. There are not many at all. I had my sunshade custom made by Mac1 back in June. I don’t know if he still has some but I cannot be certain about that. He is slow to answer emails and it is best to call him…

I’m glad I saw this thread because you guys are posting about my exact question; the quality of the big Nikko! It sounds like you are very happy with the scope.
How does it do when you have a bright background? Right now I have a very cheap scope on a very expensive gun and I’m not happy! I do my 100 yard and up shooting at a location that faces west and I always end up dealling with the scope getting flared out and milky.
Under the conditions I shoot, even a good scope will need a long shade. Does the Nikko come with one or is there a source for a long shade you can direct me to?

Oh, I agree 100%. I have the Nikko 10-50×60 and the Nighteater 6-24×56 so I know that comparing high and low cost scopes is a thankless task. That being said, I think that the Nighteater is very good and bares up well with its bigger brother until the magnification is really cranked up, and it seems like a similar thing with the ZOS.
I have a Nikko 10x50x60 on my EV-2 and it is just as you say, not even in the same league. On 10x I would say they are close and then as you go up in magx you really start to see the difference in the light quality. With the ZOS your field of vision narrows, like a tunnel effect when looking through the scope and you don’t get that with the Nikko. You have to remember the Nikko is a $1000 scope and the ZOS is $250 for a good one. You just can’t compare a $250 scope to this scope that is $500 +++++. The only good comparison is that the ZOS is a lot better all the way around that the Leapers 8x32x56. The big factor is that it is a side wheel focus. I have never looked through the lower power Nikko’s so I can’t give you a comparison on those either. But on low Power like 10 to 20x it is pretty close the big Bushnells.
I am not trying to puch these scopes but it is a big step up from any of the other side wheel scopes below $500.. that is why I have had so many and then I sold them to someone that found out just how good they were and then I just purchased another one to replace it.
How would you compare the ZOS to the Nikko 10-50×60 scope? I know first hand that it won[t be in the same league, but I’m interested in seeing how far it eats into the big Nikko
The ZOS does not get blurry at the high mag. The resolution comes down a little on 40X and maybe the brightness of the scope comes down a little. I pretty much shoot my gun on 40x all of the time as I use it for a field target gun. I think it is plenty good for Ft and that says a lot for the scope. I would have purchased a total of 4 of them now, over the last 4 or 5 months if they were not a pretty good scope. All I can really compare it to is that the quality is quite a bit better that the Leapers 8x32x56 which I have owned. My friend that has a Tony Tuned Condor just bought a ZOS from and replace the Leapers with it and he is very impressed with the ZOS.
I shoot from 50 to 150 yards.
Is the 10x40x50 ZOS qualified for the the job?
Does it get blurry in higher magnifications?
YKou get them off of ebay. Here is one just life I purchased this week. this is a very good price for this one as I pay about $50 more. This scope is being offered from the same dealer I got mine from…Check it out..
Where can you buy ZOS scopes?
To shoot FT your going to want at least a 8×32 scope and there are not many out there for under $300… I am using a ZOS 10x40x60 on one of my FT rigs and it is a very good scope and you can pick up a good one on ebay that comes with a sunshade and a 4 inch side/focus wheel for a little over $200. I have 2 of these scope and my buddy has one. they are hard to beat for the money. The scope in the photo is a ZOS 10x40x50..
