Q:

Scuba tank refills?

I’m thinking of buying a scuba tank, where do you guy’s get them filled? Any do’s or dont’s I should be aware of, any special laws, I’m in Ohio if that matters? Can you get them filled where guys get paintball gun supplies?

The firehouses overfill my SCBA tanks to 4700 psi regularly so they cool down to 4500 typically. SCBA tanks are hydro tested to 7500.

Only “Laws” related to Scuba/SCBA are the DOT laws. Everything else are industry rules. Fun fill fact! SCBA tanks do not require a visual inspection. I bet a lot of non diving folks have been taken for that one.

You can buy a $4 tank sticker from the dive shop that says “paint ball use only”. Then you can fill anywhere without a dive license.

I got PADI certified in college too and it has come in handy a few times. Besides it was fun.

Some dive shops only fill if you are a certified diver.
I went to the local shop and explained what I wanted to do.
I bought a tank for $149 from him and he was happy to fill it.
He asked if he could see my gun so I brought it in to his dive shop (cased of course) he and I have been freinds since!
I actually became a certified diver thru his shop.
(Now I can fill anywhere)

I keep my local firehouse well greased in Krispy Kremes. The only problem I have going over there is those guys love to talk and I sometimes get stuck for an hour. They are a great group of guys. My local firehouses (3 under the same name) – each has a 6000 psi compressor and a large tank and a shielded fill station. I simply called the chief for permisson originally and they called me back after a couple of days and said I could go to all three and to let them kow the chief said it was ok. Since I am using two 4500 psi CF SCBA fire tanks they are familiar with them. I only paid $200 each for the two used 2007 tanks.

John paintball places can fill them usually do 3000 psi tanks also fire dept if you know someone there or just walk in and let them know what you are doing with it for air gun use for targets and hunting which ever you do! they are usually really good about filling and some donuts and pizza works well with the guys where I take mine in! I also posted a tank I can sell you if you are interested it is a 3000psi aluminum scuba tank like new 88 cu ft!

Now that’s an avatar!!! 😀 Right on WOK!

Oh look, there’s a question about tanks too. What airgun(s) are you shooting? The SCBA tanks take 4500 psi and that translates into many more refils and less back and forth to whoever fills your tank. The carbon fiber tanks are more expensive, but they are worth it in the long run…at least to me trhey are.

Good luck! 😀

+1 dive shops. If you have a very long drive or shoot a lot then consider 100cuft or 120cuft tank. And most shops will overfill to 3100psi or 3200psi without question- giving you more fills. You can weight the numbers here: http://www.airhog.com/tank.htm

I do most of my plinking with an IZH-46M which has helped my air usage a lot 🙂 I now use a 30 cuft pony tank for the range and for top ups while at home. My dive shop is 5 minutes away and they fill while I wait. At 3100psi that gives me enough fills before my next visit. http://www.diversdirect.com/scuba-diving/catalina-30-cu-ft-pony-tank/
