SECOND air rifle for a kid?????

so I am going to be getting my son a BB gun(daisy) first to teach him the basics and as he shows progress and safety, I want to upgrade him to a decent PCP in 177. something that has a regulator that I can work on and something that adjust the power on so first he can start at a low power (lots of shots) and later as he gets better turn the power up so that we can start hunting. I want something that I can gradually make better with him and show him the basics of how the gun works and how to upgrade it. also it needs to be under 400$. I am looking at the hatsan at44. but any and all sugestions are welcome. :biggrinn:
