Shooting Ranges!

Hey guys! Remember me? Yep, I still hang out around here. Just a little less vocal. 🙂

Figured I’d update you on some shooting. Got a new reloader and changed up my loads a bit in the blaser LRS2. The .223 is now using 70g berger vld with some varget pushing it. The .300wm now has 210g vld powered by retumbo. Got the loads worked up and went out last Sunday to do some accuracy/consistency testing (need to make sure the powder dispencer’s variations are acceptable) as well as get a drop chart going. Nice day out, no wind but a bit chilly. For some reason the damn .300wm brass went wrong. Couldn’t chamber a single round, even though the load development rounds, loaded exactly the same, went perfectly fine. That will be solved tomorrow afternoon hopefully.

The .223 though went well. After sighting in, the groups at 100 yards went well, less than a quarter inch, but didn’t bother measuring. Started working out from there using a ballistic calculator as a baseline. 250 was right on the money so I moved on to 500. It was pretty close. Still performing superbly at that range, they have a 4″ plate (250 yards+ are steel targets) and I couldn’t miss. After wasting a few rounds playing with that (you try to stop when you’re making a tiny plate swing around) I moved to 750. Still working like a laser. Ballistic calculator was a bit off, but not far. After dialing it in I was grouping in around 4″. Moved to the 1000 after that. Getting the .223 to 1000 has been my goal, and was the reason for the change in loads. The range guy said there have only been a couple people there that can consistently do it, and I want to be one of them. The round goes subsonic shortly after 900 yards, so I wasn’t sure how the round was going to handle it. Long story short, I didn’t get it dead on this time. I dialed in according to the range calculator and hit a couple feet high, subsequent shots were very inaccurate but all high. Adjusted to compensate and it was way low. What was happening was the ballistic calculator wasn’t far off, but some rounds were hitting the top of the steel plate and bouncing into the dirt above it. By the time I figured it out I didn’t have much ammo left. Last round got the corner of the 8″ plate so I think I’m on, but it won’t be until the next range that I find out for sure, and see how accurate it still is.

Some pictures, because I know you’d all be pissed if you read all of that and didn’t get any.

New scope for the .223 barrel after the deployment. It’s a Premier Heritage Tactical 3-15×50. As some of you know, the .300wm barrel has the bigger Premier, and they are absolutely superb. Please don’t judge the scope by the pictures, for few cameras could match the clarity of these scopes. All of these were taken at 15x zoom.

Adjusted to 1000 yards. You can see there was very little wind to deal with.

The view at 500. The reticle is pointed at the 4″ target I killed. Another 4″ hangs to the right of it.

750 yards.

And 1000. It’s a bit blurry, probably my shivering hands, but the 8″ target is the POA.

Also pulled out the old Finn Mosin Nagant M91 to play with. Only shot at 250 yards, could barely tell where I missed to at that range, need a spotter to try and reach farther. But I’ll be honest, shooting this any farther would probably be just luck. I did hit the steel most of the time at 250, which I was very happy with.

Aimed at 250. Also gives you a good view of the range.

Now for the army fun part. Went to the range at work on Monday to use the brand new M2A1 .50 cal machine guns. For anybody that may have used the old one, the biggest difference is we no longer do headspace or timing on them. Just throw a barrel in and shoot. Makes life easier. Long story short here, it was the worst range I’ve ever been to in the army. We were out in miserable cold all day. Couldn’t feel my feet most of the time. Basically we nor the guns were prepared well. Ended up staying the night at the range and cleaning the cosmoline packing grease out of the guns all night to get them actually ready. Went out the next day which was very slightly better weather to shoot and the guns worked well. It’s an impressive thing, there is a whole lot of power there. I couldn’t shoot it at all, I don’t do machine guns well and the recoil was trying to knock the tripod over the whole time. So all of the little targets were completely safe, but it was still very cool to play with.

With the thermal sight mounted.

Out on the range.

So there you go. Hope you enjoyed the rambling and pictures. Yay for shooting!

Here’s the large target and 4″ targets at 500 yards through the spotting scope… In the rain 🙂

It was a good time… The rain and weather front gave us zero wind!!! Which made shooting more predictable at those long ranges.

Lama’s platform is super accurate and his hand loaded 223 were simply amazing.

I personally witnessed two golf balls hit and a third shot that created a “puff of white” which means a hit to me 🙂

The old Russian rifle was fun, I could see the rounds landing like a “baseball” at 750 yards through the spotting scope. Mr Lama would hear me shout “hit” followed by a “dong” about three seconds later 🙂 lots of fun.

Great Knife!! I am sure the other drivers and pedestrians in your area appreciate it too now that you don’t think they are 2x farther away!!!!

Damn funny post too…. LOL!

What do ya mean hard to see. 😕 You just had your eyes worked on! 😆

If you remembrer, when you said you had the Eye work done, i told you that I sure wish I could do thet!

Well, Merry Christmas to me. I DID!!! Wooooo-Hooooo!!! 😀 I had no Idea that trees at over 100 yards had individual leaves on them. Much less at half a mile! Whats’ embrassing is that the contacts I was wearing before, to correct the very strong stigmatism, Unknowlingly to me, made every thing appear apx. 1/2 smaler than it really was. So my little 80 yard range apeared a long way to me, but in reality it wasn’t . The Dr. explained what I was seeing would be the same as someone with normal vision looking at a target at 160 yards.

Now the good part is, 160 yards with my .257 Airgun now doesn’t look like shit! 😀

I got a real kick out of taking a leak the first time when I could see again. My Pecker was Huge!!! 😯 😆
Well, at least it looked Huge to me after all these years at seeing in 1/2 size. 😳 😆 :8:

Well, SSShooter told me I had to brag, and obviously I have no problem with that. 🙂

We went out last weekend and discovered a new target at the range. Someone thought it would be a good idea to hang up golf balls at 500 yards. I wouldn’t have even seen them had it not been for him and his big spotting scope, they were tiny even at 15x. Here they are through his spotting scope, I think this is magnified somewhere near 40x.

Took a few rounds, but managed to hit 2 of them. Really hard to see where I missed, just digging a crater behind them so couldn’t really judge corrections well. But still hit them, and I was still really excited about that. Haha. SSShooter used my rifle and killed the 4″ plate at 500 yards, not a half bad shot! There were two guys with their souped up Remington 700s there that were shooting at the bigger 500 yard targets and barely hitting, so it definitely isn’t easy.

Also, thanks to the spotter, was able to stretch the old Mosin out. That old thing shoots very well still. Pretty consistent hits at 500 yards, and managed to hit the 750 once! The rifle is definitely capable, but it is very hard to see 750 with those iron sights. If I could find a way to get a little more up with them I could try the 1000 yard targets… 😈

Sup dude!

The .50 cal looks like fun!!!!

Ahh, OK, Went to the Liberty hill range a few times when we still lived by Ft. Hood.

Would be nice to stretch the .257 out a few hundered yards!

Hey lama,
you don’t have unload those cases to use the belted mag re sizer, just in case you were thinking of unloading them ,

collet slides over case loaded or not , then whole thing goes into die . precautions used of course .

nice read again, need to get my butt out and burn some powder also .

lol… got the coat… and I have some cold weather shooting gloves coming this xmas… just make sure the wind chill is above 25F and I’m game 😉

You’re right powderburner, that is exactly the problem. And I do remember you telling me about those. About to order one of those this weekend. 🙂

No worries SSShooter, we will go before long. Now that everything is running I can go much more often. Made 100 rounds of .223 in about a half hour the other day, so it’s going well. Should have some .300wm ready to go soon, so go buy a coat. 😆

Knifey, sorry I haven’t made it by. Been slammed at work since I got back, so that has pretty much consumed my life. The times I’m not running in cirlces I just go to sleep. haha. But no, I didn’t move, still hanging around hood. I don’t shoot on post because I would have to register my guns, and I’m just not a fan of that. That range is down in liberty hill. I’ll give you a call some time though, may not have F-1 to watch but I’m sure there’s something on TV. And good work with the case! Glad you won, about time. 😉

B’out damed time you showed up! Missed you for F-1 season. S. Vettle kicked ass! 😈

Those first pic’s don’t look like Sportsman range on F.H. You move? 😥

Our humble little range is all ours now. Won the court case. Finally! 😀

Getting a Kick out of the .257. 😈

M&M

Glad the 223 is working out. Sorry I couldn’t make it to the range… Too damn cold for me 🙂 …next time!

PS. Those 50cal rounds look freakin enormous!

Nice Llama.. you get to shoot all day at the Army range… on OUR DIME!!!! 😀 😀 😀 😀

Take that .50 out to your private range…. get that would raise some eyebrows!! LOL

jba

Nice to see you Lama

:11:

Really cool reading man, glad to hear from you. Any time im loading i always have the firearm there to check for chambering .
:4:

How many times have the cases been loaded. On belted magnums the full length resizer doesent size the whole case,it depending on how hot your running your loads, as
to how many times you can reload the case before you have to resize the base of the case

I mentioned this when you first bought the 300.
Inovative technologies i believe is the name of the place that sells this sizer

Any way this works beautifully. A must for belted mags

Pretty cool you getting to work with the maw deuce like that. Now that’s a BFG. Lol
