Q:

(SHROUD PICS ADDED now with video) recomended hole size

I had seen a post last year, about the difference in pellet size vs the center hole size in the shroud. I can not find it now. If someone can post a link or new info it would be great.

I can’t remember what the recomended hole size was .??? larger than the pellet size. reason I ask, I was building a .22 cal shroud last night. The center hole was drilled at .259 and I still had my .25 barrel on. When I looked through the barrel, I had no shadowing. I test fired it (with a .25 eunjin) and it was very quiet. I will post a video later. I believe this is to tight of a tolerance, but what do you more experienced machinists think?

Thanks for the info everyone.

riffraff, I will be ordering a couple 12″ drill bits from them.

Had a ldc bored way bigger than the pellet to clear clipping issues. The noise level only increased a very small amount from the smaller hole.

It was noticable, but not enough increase to worry about.

I just made a couple for .22 barrels using a 9/32″ drill. It makes a .281″ hole.

I bought the bit at McMaster Carr, its 12″ long made of stainless. Cost around $20 but worth it.

I did some testing with 3 cores I built, all machined identical except for the bore hole.

The .281 was the most accurate on every rifle in .22 caliber and the noise level was the same as the smaller holes.

For .25 caliber, I have started using .308 holes. No clipping and still nice and quiet.

here is the post you are reffering to

I believe the post that was on this forum stated, .03″ over.

I read a post on another forum that was discussing this Israely baffled
moderator (not airgun) a few yrs ago.

They stated that the best was 0.02 – 0.04 ” But they were dealing with
supersonic rounds.

But that’s only what I read. I have no personal experience.

It is very quiet, but it was clipping at .008 over.
