Side cocker for bullpups, this is how it should be done

I finally finished the sidecocking conversion for my D-max pup. IMO much better than a bolt or lever at the rear of the gun.

The trigger was a bit weird indeed, I had assembled the gun upside down and forgotten to tighten the hammer latch pin holding screw. When the gun was upright the pin dropped down causing excessive sear engagement that varied from one shot to another 😆 It’s much better now that I tightened the screw and readjusted it.

Having done one patent I can tell you that it’s of no use in this situation. HUGE amount of work and even then it’s easy to do the side cocker a bit differently.

The action was originally MMC system, i.e. the hammer and probe are operated separately. I made the probe a pullback style that cocks the hammer as well. Then a linkage that pulls it back from the front while the lever locks the system when in front position. Yes, there’s the linkage but then there are linkages in all (most) the spring guns as well and it doesn’t seem to bother anyone.

I actually have some doubts about the colibri system, my gun originally had (actually still does) a cocking knob at the front that operates the hammer and it was uncomfortably hard to pull back on higher power levels. The lever makes cocking extremely easy but since colibri seems to have just a knob that needs to be pulled, it is likely to have the same stiff cocking problem.

IMO this side lever thing just shows that all the major commercial bullpups so far are just afterthoughts of traditional gun actions. How hard would it really be to move the sidelever to the front and embed the linkage or operating rod inside the action. I mean instead of a KISS straight linkage they could make two part linkage where a pushrod inside a casing that matches the frame operates the probe. I considered that but with my limited tools and time I decided to go for the simplest solution to test the concept.

I think it needs more linkage, perhaps some to the scope knobs… 😮

I still think the Colibri has nailed it best so far, but that is a “new” design and not a retrofit.

Ergonomically, you’ve hit the nail on the head! That’s where the lever needs to be for certain.

Was the action originally a side lever, or bolt action?

I cringed when I watched that trigger creep, crawl, and drag it’s sorry ass back to sear release. No reflection on you, but I’ll bet your accuracy would double if you got that mechanism honed and polished!

Tango ; A Patent doesn´t help. Those wiley guys at Greenbase will soon do a knock-off kit and sell it Worldwide. 18$ plus the Postage.

That’s bad ass! I agree…that’s how it should be done! Now hurry up and make one for the cricket as well and put a patent on it so the manufacturers don’t steal your idea 🙂
