Slight rust on barrel (outside)
hey everyone 🙂
On the outside of the barrel on my condor (usually where a shroud would sit) i have 3-4 small spots of rust!
Im so pissed!
I have no idea how they got there or when, but i spot them today while i took out a rabbit 😛
They are not affecting the performance of my gun, however i don’t like knowing they are there.
Does anyone know what i can do about this? or what i can do to it ASAP?
Im really frustrated they are there but im really not gun savey to know what to do correctly !

A gunsmith. I dont know if ceracote or a similar spray on finish will work or cause fitting issues maybe someone else could answer that.

If the blueing gets removed the barrel will rust easier. You can have it refinished if you are worried about it.
well i got a shroud yesterday that didnt fit so well as it was damaged during transport. It did remove some of the blue, does this matter?
That is the finish that is on the outside of the barrel thats what gives it the blue/ black color. If you use an abrasive on it you will remove that finish just like sanding paint.
What happens when i Thin the blueing?
And what is this?
A lot of gun guys use 0000 called 4ought steel wool with fine oil to rub the rust off. But be very gentle or you will thin the blueing also.

There are a whole variety of products that protect against rust, or at least claim to protect. If what idp suggests doesn’t get it all, you might try one of the many CLP ( Clean, Lubricate, Protect) products out there and a very gentle scrub with some fine scotch brite pad, only on the rust spot and use light pressure and go slow. Then to prevent future rust you should always use a light coat of your selected product. I’ve had good results with ‘CRI 301’ and ‘MFR-7’. Found both online, they go a long way so use sparingly. Also make sure to wipe off any dirt or dust before putting away the Condor as it will attract moisture which will of course lead to rust.
If it is just surface rust then spray a rag with wd-40 and rub the rust with the rag i bet most of it will come off just doing that. Then if any remains wet the rag real good with wd-40 and get the remaining rust spot good and wet and let it sit for a day then rebuff again to remove the rest. It might take a couple times using that process but it will remove it all with out removing the finish.

You can get a cold blue chemical from a local gun shop or maybe even wally world that will touch up the scratch but it is not as durable as the hot blue finish. Blueing is a controlled rusting process that puts a finish on steel that sorta keeps it from rusting. Google it for a more in depth description. Rust blueing has been around forever. The process uses a hotwater process to accelerate the process with a chemical you apply, then rinse and burnesh the blue with 0000 or corse cloth to get the blue shiney. It takes several coats to get a dark blue. A lot of older military guns were blued this way. It looks as good as any other finish if done correctly. It takeshard rubbing with 0000 steel wool to thin real blueing.
