Slots in the brass insert ?
What purpose do slots in the brass insert of the valve do, flow and improvemnt wise ?

Are you talking on the face of the valve behind the tophat or at the threads where it screws into the valve body?
No air movement performance benefits in either case I believe… But the ones cut into the thread may have something to do with air flow but I don’t really see how since when the valve is assemble those slots are not in the area that the air moves.
The slots on the brass face behind the tophat distinguish the new valves from the old valves. 😉
The newer Talon valve I received was much harder to activate (needed a larger tophat gap as well as a pw setting) than my older Talon valve.

You mean harder to open? Did you try backing the spring retaining nut out a little? I know when I got my new Hi-flow valve, it was stupidly hard to push the tophat down, I unwound the nut a good way untill it was a lot easier to push down.
