Q:

Smooth bore or rifled ?

If you were going to limit your shooting to just round ball, would you want a smooth- bore over a rifled for accuracy. If you did go with a rifled barrel, what twist rate would be best? One more Question, would you select a twist rate different if you planned on slugs and round-ball ?

Thanks Tofaz, I guess the man says 1-20 twist, 457 RB, if I can change it I will, but I think the trigger is already pulled,

1-48″ twist is a good start for RB in the many big bore calibers. ITS A SPHERE SO IT’S STABILIZED REGARDLESS. But a rifled barrel will do a much better job on accuracy than a smooth bore will.

1-22″ can also work but it depends. My DS454 works great with RB at speeds LESS than 900 but is horrible when pushed faster than 900 fps. It has a 1-22 twist.

Ya, I was thinking, that like, 1-40 something would be best. Thax, on the Edge!!

I am not sure of shooting “small” round balls, but the big ones are usually 1:44 or slower.

Kinda depends if you want to hit anything or not!

As to the rifleing, Hummmm. Slower twist for rb than long slugs, but if shooting not so long bullets, they should be ok for both. You didn’t say what cal. In .257, (since that is the only one I have experience with, I would go with 1 in 14″. 1-16 is a little too slow for bullets. And a Big reason why .25 cal. bullets wont work well in a L/W Barrel.
