Smooth Twist Barrels
Ignoring all the hype put out by the manufacturer’s about how great they are, have any of you guys tried one of these?

We have a guy here in SA who builds any barrel on request, he’s just completed my .22 barrel for my Condor. I wanted a barrel that would be accurate with anything especially 30gr Piledrivers. In the process of creating this barrel he tried the smooth twist (one of his own)which was deadly accurate with diabolo pellets at around 900fps+ but it couldn’t handle slugs.
The guys who have ordered ST barrels from him, rave about the tack driving accuracy.
Add to this, that the LW BBL’s have had consistency problems over the past few years, and the supply of BSA BBL’s has become almost Un-Obtainum, and the field of choice narrows.
There are still custom BBL’s available that very well may out shoot the newer versions of the smooth twist bbl.s. The Bench Mark barres come to mind. How much do you want to spend?
Reports had them as a bit so-so when they first came out from FX. BUT, that was several years ago. Much has changed.
They have proven to be very accurate, especially in the .25 offering, at 880-890 fps. The standard LW seems to do a little better at the higher velocities, buy most pellets do their best at under 910, so this is kinda a moot point!
Fredric won the AOA in Arizona this year with a FX-Elite, in .25. Says a lot.
A very well known long range shooter, Yrrah in Australia, is well known for his extensive research in pellet dynamics, twist rates, and stability.
In test by Yarrah, at long range, the Custom JB BSA and a factory stock Elite in .25 have been going neck and neck at long range. Too close to tell a difference.
How is this significant, the BSA is a custom tuned gun with a “Very good hand selected BSA .25 BBL. and a off the shelf ST from FX. is in a a dead tie with a highly tuned known tack driver..
Seems to me, this says all that needs to be said about the current state of the FX Smooth twist accuracy!
It will be my next purchase in a factory stock AG!

i know one who has a smooth twist.
he is not that impressed by it.
he still prefers his bsa barrel

I was just thinking of down the road in a year or so of changing out my Talon SS from a 26″ HW .177 to a 24″ .22. The concept sounds good. I am wanting to hear real world experience instead of company hype before I drop my hard earned bucks on the table.
