Q:

So I have these 16 grain jSB Jumbos

Anyone shooting these in the R3M (.22)? Does the gun favor these at all? What are your findings in using this pellet?
thanks darryl

Wingman, I’ve been subscribed to your YouTube channel for quite a while now, and enjoy your videos, but I’d never watched the pellet test. Glad I finally did. I can’t help but be impressed by the accuracy built into the Edgun. Thank you for the perspective on the barrel/pellet relationship, and the supporting video. Of course we all should know by now to feed a gun what it like best for best accuracy.

PS a big WELL DONE! on your FT win

Wingman that was an awesome post (except for the dub step). The Edgun seems so simple too, what a marvelous weapon.

Here is a vid I put together for our local club… you can see the R3M in action, the target at 2:05 I actually shot at 85 yards just to capture the pellet on cam..

I went on to win the HFT NZ nationals a month later.. :8:

Wingman, you got the FPE down that low? I admit one thing that drew me to the gun was the ability to easily tweak the power down, but I did not know it could be reduced that far. The barrel is that forgiving? I want to assume so, given that you used the gun in FT competition. Did you observe any deviation in accuracy (for better or worse)? Did you happen to see a slight increase in your shot count?
Very interesting…
thank you for your reply,
Darryl

Yes very easy to turn the reg and hammer spring down even to 12ftlbs.. I didn’t test accuracy beyond 55 yards as that is the max range of field target shooting, they shot single hole groups at that. Yes a little quieter and much more efficient on air usage.
Ed designed this barrel to shoot 18.13gr JSBs well not only to 100m but also to do well past 100m, but I have had good results with the 16gr too.
Dont get it fixed in you head that speed alone is what affects stability, it is actually more the pellet to bore fit, eg the head size. I can shoot the correct head size of pellet in my matador well over 1000fps with great accuracy.. Ed sets them up factory shooting the 18gr at 930 fps in the std matador and 960 in the long version. This is his found “benchmark with his barrel twist/dia/ pellet combo.
Currently I have found the best accuracy in my Matador at 920fps with a 5.49-5.50mm head size 18.1gr.

Keyser, what you’re telling me is almost incredible, but I believe it. I say “almost”, because you’ve checked your chronograph results against another one, and got the same results. It sure train-wrecks my thinking on stable flight speeds for the domed diabolo pellet at those weights. How handy are you at changing valve stems? That’s a different question, I know, but my brain chemistry leads me to wonder about that aspect of the power and speed the gun is generating. It’s quite a smack. But back to the pellet speed of the 16 grain pellet. I hope you get a chance to film the pellet in slo-mo. It would sure be a sight to see. Will it spiral at all? Good luck with your testing.
About the barrel twist, for the .22 Standard, does that figure of 410mm mean the rifling (and the pellet) does one complete twist, plus some in the barrel?
thanks for the info. Good luck with satisfying your long-range Jones. That kind of shooting is something special. Have you seen MOA with the Standard at 100 yards?

PS I forgot to mention (here?) I will have my .22 R3m by Wednesday of next week, UPS willing.

Ed told me that the rate of twist is 410mm. He had these made for the 18.1 and the 18.1 are my mainstay in my .22 standard. I am a recovering long range rifleman. I have obsessed about hitting animals and targets past 1000 yards. After years of experimenting with rifles and loads I have found there is an enigma factor with some loads and guns. The most important thing is to listen to the “experts” but also to experiment with speed and loads yourself. I know throwing a 15.89 JSB from an Edgun at 994 seems too fast but it isn’t. We can read charts and tables all day long but nothing beats trial and error. So my answer is I don’t know why it works. That is why I posted my findings but I am no closer to finding an answer. I can tell you my good friend and fellow airgun addict couldn’t believe what he saw, he thought my Chrony was off, but his gave the same readings.

I did not sort the pellets. I was trying to get rid of them so I figured the best way was to shoot stuff with them. I found that 930 FPS 18.1 zeroed at 68 yards gave me a 75 yard zero with the 15.89. I talked to Allen Z about this and he seemed skeptical about my findings. Allen Z is more known for Rapids so maybe the Edgun is different. I have a camera set up on order so I will try to take some slow mo shots and see if the pellet squirms, in the end however the target never lies.

This entire set up was an accident. The fact was I was trying to turn the HST down to 890 and I stupidly turned it the wrong way. The gun shot such a tight group I left the HST at 930.

I have tried the monsters in different guns with so-so results. If you could get the monsters to fly well I would be very interested because the critters shot with those monsters get wrecked.

OK, I checked the post out, keyser. What is it about the barrel’s twist that makes it shoot a 16 grain pellet and an 18 grain pellet equally well, and at speeds I’m not used to seeing in reports of the sweet-spot speed for both (about 890 fps)? With other guns I’ve had I would not dream of pushing either pellet at the speed you’re posting. Very impressive. I just don’t understand what’s going on here. Barrel choke? Choke and twist? What is it? Also are we talking unsorted pellets?
A side question. Ever tried the 25.43 grain .22 JSB Monsters? The speeds you’re seeing in the 18 grain pellet might translate to that pellet equally well since it seems to stabilize for best accuracy at very near 900 fps (the cylindrical shape seems to be pretty accurate in the 13.43 .177 as well as that speed)
thanks! (phew!!)

PS WIngman, at 20 fpe how was the noise level?

Yes 16 Gr was a recommended pellet in the past. Since the gun would shoot them much faster than suggested 915 FPS, I’d crank it down a bit.

I just hit this subject a little while ago. I too have a bunch of the 15.89.

I wound a R3M down to 20ftlbs for hunter field target a match and shot those 16gr JSBs.. shot very well.
