Q:

Some thoughts please lads

Hi guys

Some techy guidance please…

My R3m in .25 flavour is bothering me in the accuracy department. I’ve gone through all 80+ pages of the edgun forum and searched thoroughly of some possible causes (some I’ve yet to try so bare with me).

Speed 940fps
JSB Kings & Air Arms Fields tried and tested.
Atlas Bipod
S&B PM2 scope
Custom baffled cover with 2.5″ extension (have done tests with factory baffle cover)
Barrel cleaned and polished & re-leaded

I can’t seem to get a good solid consistent accuracy from her. From the factory she was doing 955fps and I gained a sub 1″ group at 100yds with Air Arms Field pellets from the magazine on a single attempt. I didn’t secure the HST upon receipt so naturally it backed off and when chrono’d was doing 870ish fps.

Reset and secured the HST at 950fps and am struggling.

I’ve not yet tried a different scope, setting a lower fps than 940 (as yet).

Chrono string was good when I set the speed to 940fps with a 5fps spread over 2 mags.

I tested her tonight and tried single feeding (between gnats biting the sh&t outta me!!) and got a nice tight group at 35yds. Have checked the baffles and no signs of clipping. Tried loose grip, firm grip, loading bipod, gentle reward pull on bipod, no bipod etc.

Always seem to get a flier with every group I try.

Here’s some pics for reference…(coin in pic is british 5p 18mm across)

First zero when rifle brand new Air Arms Field Pellets

First group at 75yds when rifle brand new Air Arms Field Pellets

35yd 3 shot Zero group after barrel polished with baffle extension shroud cover (speed 950fps) Air Arms Field Pellets

35yd Test groups (speed 940fps) JSB King

40yd Test group (speed 940fps) JSB King

100yd Test Group (speed 940 fps) JSB King

Any thoughts and ideas before I start playing with speeds & different scope??

Cheers

EdGun

I have to ask, where did you get that custom bolt? That Maddy looks bad ass I must say :8:

Cheers mate…took a while to get her that way

The bolt is stock from the edgun, with some filler a simple mod for anyone 😉

I tried using some O Rings but it didn’t hold it secure enough, so some filler and pressed on so it hardened and jobs a good’un! I have the Standard size, not small bolt lift. It does slightly rest against the stock so maybe the small version is better suited or a quick dremel job to whip some material away.

Well guys I’m stumped!

Loaded up my 6 magazines with Air Arms Fields rather than the JSB’s and headed to a permission that’s like a billiard table, wind was good this evening around 3mph so ideal conditions to do some testing.

Started off with a 35yd zero really getting back to basics on cheek weld etc.

Then moved back to 50yds, then 75yds, and finally 100yds.

Each group is 3 shots, the third group of the 50yd range I let my head position slip a little hence those 2 at 9 o’clock.

The 100yd left hand group I was testing the ballistic calculator and found I was 6 clicks low hence the following groups POI ok for elevation.

I’d say that’s acceptable!? :8: :5:

I then tested some Predator Polymags which I use on a squirrel feeder at close range, very acceptable!

All I did to the rifle last night was refill to 235bar, mark up baffles with sharpie ready to check for clipping, and put my custom shroud back on.

I’m scratching my head, Keyser you may have been on the spot with the head position mate, really concentrated on that and this was the results!!

Many thanks to all you lads…the case is solved I hope :biggrinn:

Without a fast camera it’s just guessing.

Yeah, I’d try backing the fps down. Mine shoots like a laser @ 915-920 w/ Kings and AA. It was at 940 and it skipped around.

Did these a while back and have only polished barrel once to clean crud out from factory, then I was a gentle princess with it, using a woolen mop and bore rod with slow dozen strokes or so, nothing too OTT. These were the results…

Accuracy after the initial polish was the 1″ shoot n c dot and 3 shots in same hole.

Most perplexing!!!! 🙂

Um, not sure you are supposed to regularly clean the barrel with autosol. Like you Said it is a polishing compound. You will polish out the rifling of your barrel with time no? A lot of people polish their barrel once for better accuracy but only once and some say you should not use autosol or at least be careful with it.

Can you push some pellets through the barrel and check the rifling marks on the pellets?

That’s on the cards to be tested Ali, cheers mate

One interesting point to be raised from speed of pellet is the videos Ed has on YouTube shooting eggs out at 100yds and balloons at 150+…what speed was that rifle running at?? 😉

Bring your speed down to 880-890 my 25 does not group good past 900 fps

quote Sam63:

1) The pellet getting damaged going into the barrel will kill accuracy. The pellet should be going in smooth without any resistance.

2) Pellet clipping on exit. An LDC not lined up properly or just not made right will cause clipping. I have heard if the LDC is too tight loading(shooting) two pellets at once damages the LDC.

3) Have you checked the crown of the barrel?

4) Have you cleaned the barrel? I use Prolix or Kroil. Both get the barrel very clean, I find 3 – 5 patches of Prolix the fastest. If the pellets and gun were out in high humidity/moisture or my sweat I use Kroil.

5) Try different pellets. Unlikely but worth a try if the above do not correct the issue. Benjamin domes and H&N have shot well in a few Edguns. I have an LW barrel that loves Crosman in the brown box.

Hi Sam & cheers for the reply.

1- feels fine, other than the small nudge of the pellet being seated there’s minimum resistance, I even tried sized pellets from my bsa barrel on my rapid through it just to see.

2- checked the baffles and no signs of clipping

3- crown looks ok

4- yup cleaned with autosol (ultra fine car polishing compound used regularly here in the uk)

5- tried barracudas, Benjamin domes, and all other kinds of .25 pellet, only 2 that group consistently well are JSB and Air Arm Fields.

Will post a pic of the Crown though if I can get one later 😉

The times I have had accuracy issues there were fixes. The one time there wasn’t a fix it was a bad barrel.

Hi Shooter

Cheers for the idea of flight path checking, I think I’ve got a seben scope mount and a digital camera capable of slow motion so will give it a whirl when next able. Would spiralling make much of a difference at 35yds?? I’d have thought it’d be an awful amount, so much you’d be able to see with the naked eye through scope?

The serial number will yield what type of info there mate?

Firstly, you should determine if the pellets are stable in flight. If they are spiralling you can forget about accuracy. Many people tell that it may be parallax error, canting error, bad pellets, and so on. Of course, these also have an impact but let’s try to eliminate the most prosaic issue and then switch to more sophisticated ones.

If you have a fast camera and scope mount you are all set. If you do not have that equipment you can try to shoot at longer distance with the sun behind you, preferably during dusk time. Please check that firstly. What’s your gun’s serial number? If you have four digits you can just give me the first two.

Quick plumb bomb check…phone camera is wonky not the scope/plumb bomb lol

Cheers for an informative reply Keyser, some info I forgot to mention was I have a bubble level which has been set with a plumb bomb…but I’ll recheck it to eliminate the possibility. Parallax error I check for by winding scope to 25 mag and setting parallax, unless the parallax is waaaaaay out I’d have thought at 35yds you’d get away with it but again something to recheck.

I totally get what you say about cheek weld, because I have a giraffe like neck I try to index the dip in my cheekbone on the mag every time (I’m a lefty).

My nearest shooting buddy is either 200 or 300 miles away lol so may make a weekend trip of it 😉

Keep any ideas coming lads…all opinions welcomed
