Sound Test – R3 .22, R3 .30, R3M .25, Lelya, Veles, Cricket
Hi guys. Brown truck dropped of a new toy today. EXTECH 407730 Sound Level Meter. (I also got Lyman Electronic Digital Trigger Pull Gauge, but didnt play with it yet)
Its is probably one of the best units you can buy without paying too much $67.99 from Amazon Prime.
It has FAST 125ms and Slow 1s modes, but does not have Impulse 40ms mode. Impulse mode would be more accurate for this test, but that unit cost over $1000 (EXTECH 407780) and I just really wanted to get a reference point and not a full blown sience/cleanroom/soundproof lab type test. :8:
Sound meter was setup 1ft left and one 1ft forward of the muzzle of the rifle and set at 45 degree angle toward the gun. Guns are fired into silent trap.
In order for the Sound meter to be more accurate I set it to FAST mode, A-pressure and 80-110db mode for high power rifles and 60-90db for Lelya and Veles.
3 shots fired with each gun and average of 3 is calculated for the final result.
So here they go.
Loud to mousefart. (all Matadors and Cricket shooting 890-900fps)
EDgun Matador R3M .25 Std – 98.2db
KalibrGun Cricket .22 Std – 98.1db
EDgun Matador R3 .22 Std – 96.5db
EDgun Matador R3 .30 Long – 96.3db 😯
EDgun Lelya .177 – 83db
EDgun Veles .177 – 77.2db
I didnt want to believe when ED said that R3 .30 is just as quiet as .22. But data proves it! It seems louder because the hammer hits the valve harder/louder next to your ear when you shoot.

Nice chart.
I returned the sound meter back to Amazon. It will not really measure true value of the shot sound because it doesnt respond fast enough.
But it was fun anyway.

I appreciate you thread here, have you ever moved the meter away to simulate what a neighbor say 100′ or 250′ away might hear ?? I was looking at sound level meters via. Amazon and google and stumbled right back here to the TAG !! 🙂

I found this chart produced by someone else online that kind of shows what added distance does, as far a reducing the sound level.

I just wanted to emphasize that this test does now show the true and correct loudness of the gun. The sound meter I got is just “too slow” to capture the true and accurate peak sound.
The Fast setting on this meter is 125miliseconds and that means that pellet is about 35-40 yards out of the barrel by the time the Mic wakes up. But this test will give you a rough reference point on how loud the gun is overall in comparison to each other. The real test would be done with sound meters that can go down to MicroSeconds. 😯
Interesting data. Even if the instrument isn’t the 1000$ version it still gives a relative comparison of the different rifles. It would be interesting to put it at shooters ear too, to try and represent what we hear when we shoot.

Yes. It is very sensitive, but with Max Hold feature for each shot and exact same position of the gun in reference to mic it was very repetitive.
I would really like to play with one that has Impulse mode (super fast response time), but its out of my reach. So I will play with this one little more.
I bought a similar sound meter from Amazon and quickly returned it as it fluctuates wildly with the slightest sound. Totally unreliable, not saying yours is.
I downloaded a free trial version of Adobe Audition and recorded a .22 Marauder, TalonP, TalonP with TT shroud, TalonP with ParisD shroud. It’s way better as you can graphically see the intensity of each shot. My trial is expired, but I saved this screenshot for you to study. The first one is the Marauder, follow by two shots of TalonP w TT shroud, follow by TalonP unshrouded (LOUD), followed by three ParisD shroud.

My Cricket Std. pushing 16s out at 28fpe or 890 fps doesn’t sound like it’s at 98db ? Is your Cricket turned up ? A Marauder .22 with a decent tune is at 86-87 db and my Cricket seems only slightly louder like maybe 90 to low 90s db ?
