Q:

Spring tension decreases with time?

Hi there,

Just a quickie:
It might be just because my rifle is brand new, but i had to give the spring a slight fraction of turn clockwise after 1500 shots as the power had decreased a little.
Found it out today when my POI dropped a mildot (i initially tought my scope had given up), but then found out after chronoing the rifle.
I suppose it is because the spring settles in after the initial thousand compressions.
….or am i supposed to give it a fraction of turn periodically to keep the power constant? Yes the small grub is in place and there is no way it could have moved.
Mind you, being mine below 12ft lbs the spring is almost entirely decompressed, so it is slighly more difficult to keep it at a fixed tension, as it is almost all the way turned out and not so “tightly” squeezed in, if you know what i mean.

Thanks for your expertise!!

Big thanks! 😉
Ps
I’m using a different chrono now, and it ia much more consistent…
I suspect it was te old chrono failure rather than Ed’s engineering!

Yoda, here is the link to Dr. Edgun’s regulator adjustment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvJORdBt2KM

…now that ive read better.. If with the lowest setting (spring almost fully decompressed) you get 850fps, (and i get half of it) then Ed must have already reduced the regulator pressure on the uk ones….

Any link to the tube video? 😛
I hate having to strip the gun down but i’ll consider it if necessary.
Thanks for the advice

Hoot: In Texas, Spring tension increases with Summer. 🙂

Dvdrw: What a coincident, I just upload some pics on Dr. Edgun’s tension screw and de-gas tool in my post.

Yoda: My Edgun shoots 32 ft lbs with 18.1 grain JSB. The original tension screw is too short and there is no room for me to reduce the tension below ~850 fps. I believe you have to reduce regulator pressure to match the low HST in your gun. Dr. Edgun has a video in Youtube for reg adjustment. The speed becomes more stable and the number of regulated shot is increased after reg adjustment in my gun.

Being endothelium in texas, it doesn’t sound he was talking about <12ft lbs rifles, am i right?
Re the new tension screw, i’d be interested as well, also as i will be getting the orings from ted, so i can have everything shipped together…
In my case though, it is not an issue of the thread that is running out, i have still room to unscrew it, problem is the power drops too much if i do it.
Re unscrewing the regulator by 1 turn….how can i do it?
Pros- cons of doing such procedure?
I’d imagine if you reduce the regulator pressure, then you need to increse tension on the hammer’s spring, and perhaps this stabillizes it more?
C’mon guys, help us!! 🙄

Ted,

Tell us a little bit more about this aftermarket tension screw. In your opinion is a must have on the FAC R3 too, or just the 12 ft/lb ones?

endothelium,

some pictures ?

In Arkansas, Winter tension decreases with Spring.

Ok thanks, so some tuning after the break in is expectable…
I still have some thread to play with, but as said, keeping a certain power is easier at higher velocities as when the spring is too decompressed it becomes more ‘unstable’…

Yoda, the power (tension?) first increased and then decreased with time, at least in my gun (.22 R3) showing this phenomenon. Dr. Edgun (Oldgoat/Tedd) suggested to reduce the regulator pressure by 1/3 trun and it seems to reduce the speed changes in my gun. I have the same problem with the tension screw, which is too short to allow me reducing the tension. In the original setting, the screw was held in place by only two turns of thread. But Dr. Edgun made me a new tension screw (just received it yesterday), which is longer and has a lock nut in there. That should fix the problem. Will find a time to install it this weekend. Thank you Dr. Edgun.:D
