Q:

Springers or gas ram

I know I should probably post this on another forum but I have always trusted all of your opinions and expertise.

I sold my condor a few months back because I didnt have time to tinker with it anymore. It was a monster well at least in my eyes.

Okay on to my question I am thinking of buying a gasram rifle.

Do you all have any experience with them good or bad? If so what one would you recommend. I would like to get a .22 cal with over 20 fpe if that is realistic. Actually would like one in the 30 fpe range but I am guessing that is out of range for a gas ram.

Thanks for your opinions.

Get the Crosman Titan, I have one and I love it.

It’s cheap, shots heavy pellets well and is easier to shot then the old spring guns.

Always going to be things that come up when talking about springers or rams.

those who havent learned to properly shoot a springer will tell you they are not accurate. Look in the ‘Other Guns’ section and you’ll find groups I’ve posted with various springers (and yes, I own a …ahem… few of them) that will put many PCP groups to shame.

The springer vs PCP debate goes on and on but the bottom line is this… if you are wanting to not have the hassle of PCP’s then a springer is a viable option. Before someone busts my chops on not liking PCP’s, know that I’ve got a …ahem… few of those as well.

So, with that in mind, on to your original question.

Springer vs gas ram. I have gas rams, I have professionally tuned springers and I have springers that I have tuned.. along with bone stock springers.

What you have to realize with either a springer or ram is that the more you go up in power, the more difficult it will be to shoot accurate. Not to say it cant be done, but will take practice.

The biggest advantage to a gas ram is the ability to leave cocked for extended periods without wear on the spring. That said, you can leave a springer cocked for a normal hunting session with no fatigue as well.

A gas ram will be a bit harder to cock for a given power level. It will also tend to have a sharper recoil. It will not have the spring noise or twang associated with a spring gun.

A tuned springer…even home tuned with a Macarri or Vortek kit will give a nice firing cycle as well and installing a kit is fairly simple. I’ve done a couple of guides on how to do this.

With springers, you do need to consider proper scope and mounts. BKL one piece mount and a good springer rated scope will work well.

For the power you are wanting, I would really take a look at the R1. It’s not so heavy, but certainly has enough heft to help with the recoil, it’s going to shoot in the 18-20fpe range depending on tune and pellet, and can be extremely accurate. I’ve posted sub half inch groups at 50 yards with one.

Out of the box, it will be a bit twangy, but this does not affect function. You can install a kit at any time to rid the twang.

If you are wanting still more power, then the big Theobens, RWS 48/52/54, or the Patriot/Kodiak. Dont buy the Turkish shit. Be sure if you get a Patriot, it is the older English made one.

Another option would be a B30. Yes, it’s Chinese. It’s a copy of an RWS 48. It’s a big tank of a springer. Mine is untuned and not twangy… it’s rough, but it will shoot sub half inch groups at 30 yards all day long and spits out .22 pellets at around the 22fpe mark.

Bear in mind with springers, you often get the best fpe out of lighter pellets vs heavier pellets (opposite of typical PCP results)

Also bear in mind that springers and rams, will be far more pellet picky than most PCP’s.

Yes, springers have quirks that PCP’s dont have, but if you learn these quirks and take time to research, you will find that a 20fpe springer will be every bit as accurate and dependable as a 20fpe PCP.

Look at it this way.
Gas ram can be left cocked with out worry about weakening a springers spring. Gas will most likely have less recoil. (never fired one so just guessing on that one)
Tolerates cold weather better.
Easier to cock.
probably less hold sencetive.

I had a super modded condor and tanks and all that stuff. I just want something I dont have to fill and be able to shot some critters and have some fun.

I was looking at one of the crosman rifles with gas ram.

I sure miss that rifle but I dont miss the money I had sunk into it.

Good springer?

Isn’t that a oxymoron?

Crow has the best advice on the subject.

I once owned a 1912 BSA Improved Mdl D, elegant rifle, however I fail to see much develoment since it was made. 😛

For the price of a decent springer. Get a benji discovery and get 40 shots at 21 fpe. Or quick mod valve get 14 at 30 fpe

The RWS 34 with wood or synthetic stock in .177 or .22 is a good springer to start with for around $200.00. Not the power you’re looking for, but it is easy to shoot compared to the high fpe springers.

Sam 😎

theoben eliminator, webley patriot, benjamin trail series, ruger air hawk, stoeger x50 etc.

springers of this power seldom give respectable accuracy however.

go for mid-teens power, and get an AA TX200.

my old super streak shot at upward of 27ftlb., but somehow was as accurate as most english springers. irony is, it was made in CHINA!

so i saved the barrel, at least. 😎
