Q:

Summer project

Hey everybody, so I am thinking about starting my first custom condor. Things I want it to be able to do: ~3 inch groups around 150 yards, knock down song dogs past 100 yards, shoot slugs at the given accuracy at said yards. What is needed to do these things? Should I be looking at a different platform? I would like the gun to be a .25 but if someother caliber (.257, .308, mid-bore etc.) would be easier to build i would change the plan. What do you think?

Alright! Thanks for the help Jerry! Hope to have an order for you soon!

I don’t keep track of the internals of every gun but here’s a link from Ced who was getting about 118fpe.

Tony has also made a bunch of guns that hit or exceed 100fpe with slugs.

If you use the handy google search link, you can find a lot more info.

What internals were in what gun that flattened the slug?

A 100fpe .25 shooting heavy slugs will have plenty of energy remaining at 100 yards to kill dogs. Slugs don’t lose energy near as fast as pellets. You can find pics on this site of 100 yard shots with .25 slugs completely flattening themselves on impact.

bigger bore equals more head shots, w/good scope 😈

My concern with the .45 is the exit hole. I don’t want to be sewing hides after I skin, just skin and stretch. I was hoping the .25 or a mid-bore would just enter, mushroom or shatter, and not exit or rip any kinda giant hole. I know it’s kinda hard given the killing strategy used with airguns (bigger hole=more blood loss=more deader animal), but I think with a good enough hollow point bullet and fast enough velocity the bullet should give all of its energy in the body cavity of a coyote, right?

Song dogs at 150 yards will take quite a bit of energy to make clean kills… probably a bit much for a .25. It’ll shoot that far, but it won’t have much punch by the time it gets there. You would probably want to up the caliber to the .257 or .308 at least… might look at the Texan .45…
