Super Long Barrel

So, winter is fast approaching, and its time to start messing with my rig. I was considering a crazy long barrel to increase range/power/accuracy. Has anyone here ever tried like a 36 inch barrel and removed an inch at a time till they achieved a length of diminished returns? If so, how long is too long?
There’s a guy across the pond who seems like he could build such a barrel, and also makes some pretty interesting hammers that slides on barrel, not along inside of the frame. I’ll include a link, hope it doesn’t violate a rule.

Theoretically, if two barrels, of different length (but the same twist rate), were shooting the same slug at the same speed, wouldn’t the longer barrel usually be more accurate/consistent partly due to the increased spin on the slug?

Longest “barrel” I’ve used was 6 foot 2 in., a blowgun pipe rigged on a Condor to shoot .625 darts. Used a lot of air, but increased the effective range to 70 yds. 😛

Wonder if it’s possible to design/make a barrel that can add or subtract length using screw-on/off sections?

Won’t be shooting any pellets. These are slug guns.

And then, there’s the possibility of pellet deformation, particularly the skirt, depending on the caliber/pellet and how the air enters the barrel.

Hard part would be getting all things equal every time the rifle is disassembled for the barrel to be cut down and reinstalled. 😕

Another twist is accuracy vs efficiency. A longer barrel may be more accurate but take more air to get things up to speed.

I’d say of the three things he is looking to achieve he will probably have to sacrifice one. 😉

I think you do have to consider that in a longer length barrel that the pellet accelerates then can actually decelerate near the end of the barrel, there is an optimal length.

I’m assuming you are not merely talking about the ideal length for a stock “high flow” valve, correct?

How long does a projectile going, say 800 feet per second take to move one foot?

1/800th of a second? 0.001 seconds?

How about 200 feet per second for one foot?

1/200th of a second? 0.005 seconds?

Stop waiving the muzzle around when you pull the trigger if lock time is an issue, it’s not like there is ANY recoil for a pcp compared to a PB rifle… 😉 😆

A longer barrel increases lock time so makes a rifle that already has a relatively long locktime to one with an even longer one.

I’m building a 32″ .257 right now.

I also make the same kind of hammer except you get to keep your power wheel with mine.
