SWFA SS 10×42 Tactical
Guys need your input on SWFA SS 10×42 classic scope. Especially the reticle. hows it against the darker background like trees etc.

I can now report the SWFA Classic SS 16×42 (MQ reticle) has shown itself to be very bright, and clear. I finally got the the range on July 3 with this scope mounted to my .22 R3M. The MQ reticle is quite useful and the 16x magnification is more than adequate for .22 paper-paper at 70 yards. There is no downside to 42mm objective lens so far as brightness is concerned, and the glass is very clear. I did not perform a box test to evaluate the turrets, as I had limited time, but the series is known for excellent tracking. Minimum focus is 10 yards. I noted the rear focus ring seems about spot on to agreeing with lasered distances. Good enough for Government work!
This thread asks about the 10x model, but I have the 16x. I can say this; if the 16x is any representation of the quality of the SWFA Classic SS (Super Sniper) series, the 10 has to be a winner as well. I’ll add that if you decide to go with an FFP scope, I’d recommend looking at a fixed magnification model. I also own the BSA Tactical 4-14×44 FFP scope, and I can tell you the reticle looks pretty small at 4x (I left it at 14x). Price-wise the SWFA costs about $50.00 more than the BSA model, and I consider the SWFA to be decent step up with it’s thinner and slightly more useful reticle, and clearer, brighter glass, though the BSA is a good value for the money. Plus, the BSA can focus down a little closer than the SWFA, managing better-focused target picture by adjusting the magnification a bit; useful for shooting in one’s basement. So I don’t shoot my Edgun in the basement so much with the SWFA scope. It’s too powerful anyway. :winkn:
Anyway, SWFA Classic-series scopes represent a very good bargain. They have been reviewed as comparable to more expensive scopes in all ways important: rugged construction, excellent turret performance, brightness and clarity of glass, etc

Sorry, but I’ve been “distracted”. The 16×42 arrived and I’ve mounted it on my R3M. Right away it’s almost useless in my basement, the minimum focal distance of 10 yards being just outside my basement wall. But I did have a chance to shoot out into my small back yard, and I find this scope to be a real joy for me. I love the MQ reticle, took to it right away. Compared to the BSA 4-14×44 ffp Tactical scope, the SWFA is about the same length, if maybe a tad shorter. The glass is very clear. It’s my first real rear-focus scope. I do wonder about the turrets, which are fine in every way except for my concern about loosening up the retaining screws on the turrets to set them to zero once the desired range is found. I think this scope is more than a deal compared to the price of the BSA; it’s only $50.00 more than the listed price (exclusively) at MidwayUSA. The turrets are accurate. I shot at 25 yards, noted the poi, and was able to dial the scope in by the third shot. I didn’t have the most stable shooting platform either, so I was impressed with me and the turrets. I’m waiting for the weather to break so I can see how it performs out past 70 yards. 14x was pretty good out to about 70 yards for these old eyes, bu the holes were getting just a bit hard to see. 16X should be better, but I have to confirm that at the range. I want to use it out to 100 yards because I think that will be a suitable challenge for my eyes and the Edgun and the scope. If the 16x is inadequate, i hope to trade it in SWFA accepts trades) for the 20x. Same price.

I would say yes. I can see .223 holes on paper at 100 with the 10x.
So I guess 16x will also be sufficient seeing a nickel at 100 yards, and .22 pellet holes??

I have the SS 10x on my .308 powder burner and I can see well enough to put 2 consecutive holes through a nickel at 100yds. Brightness is also equal to my $1900 3×18 IOR Valdada with my blind old eyes.
hsmnz, One thing to consider, (and I slipped up on this when I changed my order from a 20x to a 16x Classic with the MQ reticle) is what you’re shooting at. I’m now hoping I can see a 1-inch (25mm) target at 100 yards with a 16x scope. I’m using a 14x scope now, and decided I needed a bit more magnification to punch paper at longer distances like 100 yards, especially since I want to go for sub-MOA groups at that distance. Can I or the Edgun do sub-MOA 5-shot groups at 100 yards? Maybe I’ll see, with that 16x scope. Maybe not. Of course I read many reviews about the 10x scope, and only a few about the 16x, but none of the reviews were from an airgunner. All were from long-distance shooters trying to hit a human-form target out past 1000 yards. Not the same as trying to hit or see a 1-inch target at 100 yards where groups are being measured. A hit on a human form at 1000 yards is considered a great shot, but 5-shot groups won’t be what an airgunner is used to seeing. Different strokes for different folks.

that scope has reticle lines that are 0.050 inches thin. I believe it might be OK if it has an illuminated reticle. Otherwise against a dark background it might be an issue for you. I’m looking at the SS Classic 20×42 which has a thinner reticle line (0.030 inches thin), but I only punch paper and in daylight against bright targets. Even still, if I am tempted I’ll shoot at anything anytime!

that is what I am thinking. Have researched a bit and there isn’t a single bad review of it. people are using these for long distance shooting on rifles without any issues. I think I will get one and a MTC Connect in AMD as well
