There is my equipment, the MROD, Boonie Packer sling, Tasco 6-24×44 Mildot Varmint series scope (I leave it at 10x for this stuff), shooting stick, range finder, and it’s favorite heavy pellets (Kodiak and Baracuda match).
Yup, we had a great time! Next time we will need to get some pics of the farm and some of the types of shots.
The third trip we went on (yesterday) was my favorite, at a different farm. There were thousands and thousands of Eurasian doves and pigeons. The owners of the farms appreciate the pest control, and we are happy to do it.
I shot around 120 pellets yesterday, and probably connected on half of them. Ranges for shots were between ten yards and 80 yards. After 60 yards the pellets start to drop pretty drastically.
I was using my .22 Marauder rifle set up to get about 24 good shots with 21gr Kodiaks at around 830 FPS for 32ft/lbs.
I don’t have the same type of power that the .25 cal guys like ELDY have, but I did okay with shot placement. Also, according to Chairgun software the .22 Kodiaks still had 20 ft/lbs at 50 yards, whereas the .22 RWS Super H points I had also brought (13.9gr) only had 8 ft/lbs at that distance. So, I stuck with the Kodiaks of course!
I made some good shots at 50-60 yards regularly, and a couple a little further out. I even got two bitds with one shot at about 30 yards 😀
The Talon P ELDY uses is a really cool carbine, very light and a great size. It is much handier than the Marauder I use.
Another guy we went with had a Talon SS set up in remote CO2 with a tank hanging from his belt, and an M4 stock on the carbine. It was pretty slick, but not enough power to make good hits past 25 yards or so, so he switched to his FX T-12.
The fourth guy had an FX Gladiator in .25 and he was destroying birds like no tomorrow! He carries a little click counter for his kills and he had 105 at the end of the day. Granted, he was there a few hours before we arrived, but that is still a large amount! We didn’t make an impact on the population there though, still thousands and thousands flying around when we left in the afternoon.
I learn something every time I go shooting with someone else, and it is always great to see what equipment is being used by others to see what can work.
I’ll get some pics of my Marauder up, but it is pretty stock looking. I wish it was as light at the Talon!
