Talon Shorty
I thought this might of interest to a small crowd here.
My goal was the shortest Talon possible with reliable (consistent) power, minimal POI impact from user influence, reasonably appropriate for 10m and 20y indoor offhand shooting and 20 and 30y bench shooting off the bipod. So, in short – the right indoor and backyard gun FOR ME.
Starting with a Talon frame, I used a 12 inch .177 barrel with a vented front bushing and SS endcap. I decided to stick with CO2 only for this one. Met my needs for power and consistency. 3 problems – this was too loud for indoor use on a regular basis, was not balanced well for off hand shooting (front end was way too light with the 20oz tank on the back end), and even with the short frame the slightest diff in hold made a big POI difference when shooting off the bipod (frame flex).
My efforts at solutions –
Prob 1 was addressed by hacking up an old mini shroud. NOT mouse fart quiet but still comfortable for indoor shooting while only adding about 2 inches. Cut most of the insert off, opened up the end to fit around/overlap the barrel and cut some gaps to allow some flow to the vented bushing.
Prob 2 and 3 needed to be addressed together. I needed to move the bipod back as far as I could, reinforce the rail mount and add some front weight… A tri-rail solved the weight issue (balances much better now) but didn’t fit with the foregrip. Thanks to 80Grit I was able to get the forgrip right – cut it to just in front of where the frame starts to curve into the trigger group… Hmmm tri-rail was still too long. Cut about 3/4 of an inch off and shaped the cut end to slide inside the (now) open gap in the cut forgrip.
Both the chop on the mini shroud and trirail will look better after a little clean up and I may try to shape the foregrip to round off the edges and a better mount for the bipod wouldn’t hut, but I’m very pleased with the result. Rifle is less reactive to hold fluctuations off the bipod and very comfortable to shoot offhand.
The end result is about 1.5 longer than my EDgun 😀

Condor and SS frame are the exact same size, Condor has the longer scope rail and extra upright support. Talon SS and Talon frames are identical except for the length.

Why do people keep assuming that I CUT an SS frame down? This is a Talon frame (not a Talon SS), as it came from AF. All I did was swap over to a 12″ barrel and do what I described above. The only cutting was on the plastic foregrip.
I’m confused as well. I thought the talon frame and the condor frame were both the same…having the “extra” support post connecting the scope rail to the frame??? And I thought the SS did not have this extra post??? Your rifle does not have the extra post??? Nor does the ss. Help me out here, I’m confused 😕

Like a 3.5oz CO2 tank? not sure I could move the scope far enough fwd even if I could bend my arms far enough to shoulder it. 😀
I have 2 of these (again) now and will pick up a pb style CF HPA tank to run off a regulator at some point (after finding a job) but that won’t be more compact…. as a matter of fact, I’d probably need a wider case.

Yes. Had to cut off the rise in the last inch of the stock and do a little fitting to get it to fit. I think it should have worked with just cutting the rise off the back but between the AS fitting on the back of the rifle and the B&A adapter things just were not straight. It feels LONG compared to my other rifles now 😆 That feeling will go away when the HW100 gets back home – that’s a long rifle!
I like that 2250, is that a nine oz bottle on that?

Quick size comparison. The bottom one is the 2250XT with an 18″ barrel and TKO break. I’m thinkin it may end up with a much shorter barrel and a smaller break (the 14″er it came with is on my 1322 so I’ll have to find one).
A quick 12 shot 20y group (way good enough for me). Why 12?, because I kept going until I tossed that one low to the right 🙂
