Talon SS 12" or 18" Barrel?
I have a Talon SS with a 12″ Barrel and have a 24″ barrel as well both in .22. My question to you guys is this I bought the 24″ barrel for more power and found I didn’t like the tradeoff of weight…length for more power vs the lighter weight and more compact size with the 12″ barrel. For those of you with an 18″ barrel on the talon SS how does it compare in size and weight to the 12″ and would I really be gaining a lot in the power/range department by going with the 18″ barrel. Should I spend another $160 bucks for the 18″ barrel so that I can reach out a little further and touch those tree rats?

Hmm I cut and crowned my .25 caliber barrel and the accuracy didn’t change … still getting 1/2 inch groups at 40 yards when I tested it today. Maybe my barrel didn’t have a choke to begin with ??

I don’t know how constrictive the chokes are, but gfaust’s post sounds accurate enough to me. Everything I have read leads to say that a given barrel, choked vs non-choked, the choked barrels have been more accurate by a significant margin.
Here is a quote from the Airblog,
“Also, all good PCP barrels will be choked with a slight constriction at the muzzle. Usually, it’s about half a thousandth, and it’s there to make every pellet of uniform size before it leaves the muzzle. This is why a pellet sizer doesn’t do any good.”

I have an 18″ barrel and I think it is an awesome length for hunting and plinking. Easy to manuever and still carries a wallop downrange.

If an LW barrel is cut and crowned at the muzzle end you will lose the choke. Needs to be machined from the breech end.
I put an 18″ in my SS … sold the 12″ to someone that wanted it for indoor shooting. I think 18″ is a good balance between weight and power compared to the 12 or 24 inch barrels.
Rather than buy a new barrel you might considered having your 24″ cut and crowned to 18.
18 inch is deff a good choice. Gives you decent power whilst maintaining good balance and almost carbine size. If you getting say 1000 fps on the 24, you’ll lose about 180 fps going to the 18, of which some fps can be regain with some tweeking and fettling. I have 12, 18 and 24 inchers. I tend to play with the 18 far more than any others for the reasons just stated. I’m soon to reduce the 24 to about 21 to try and find the balance perfect for me. 😀

Thanks for all the feedback…I think I’ll probably put the 24″ barrel up for sale and buy an 18″ to replace it.
