Q:

talon ss .22 tune help

Hey folks. I now own a talon ss .22. Has a much smaller top hat than my condor. I don’t think it’s a micrometer valve but I’m not sure how to tell. I bought it used. I’d like to tune it to get roughly 100 shots at 725 fps or so With 14.3 Crosman hps. what do you experts suggest? I unbound it and get 40-50 shots stating at 805 and down to 750. I’d like to drop power down and bump up shot count. I did buy a C02 adapter… but I’d like to get the air tank tuned right

Do yourself a favor and get a quick change top hat from talon tunes. You can put in the small insert and choke down that speed

I thought there was only a quick change top hat for the high flow valve?

The quick change top hat will not fit the Talon tank and valve. If you change the valve to the Condor valve you will need to get the hammer weight for the Talon

Kinda seems like he would be going backwards by replacing the standard flow with the high flow and buying the quick change top hat then restrict it back to what the standard flow already puts out. In fact I am positive the standard flow can be tuned lower than the fps he wants to get with 14 gr. pellets. He wants high shot count low power so why put in a high flow? He would be better off getting a micro meter or better yet just add a regulator to the standard flow tank.

if that is the velocity you want, what kinda spread are you willing to accept?
You can get 100 shots by default on the talon .22 but the spread will be quite large even with an average velocity of 750fps.

And what kind of application are you looking for?
If you mean to do 10m target shooting you definitely need a regulator or accept less velocity to maintain a small standard deviation.
if you just mean to plink and kill some bottles in the backyard, then you are all done as you are.
Hunting? Who cares about 100 shots! Get 10-20 shots very accurate and very powerful.

I use a micrometer tank for indoor target on a talonSS .22 with a 24″ barrel and I get 350 VERY consistent shots at 650fps with 13-15 gr pellets. But this tank will never be used for hunting.

So it all depends and what you want to do, before you can plan and tune.

I second the suggestion that you’ll need a regulator in order to bump up your shot count. I have a Talon SS .22 to which I added a reg. With Crosman 14.3gr domed, I’m getting about 80 good shots averaging 800 fps with a maximum 10-15 fps spread. I also found my groups tightened up considerably.

Before the reg, I could get about half as many shots at this velocity but there was only a fairly narrow band around 2,300 to 2,100 psi where I shot nice tight groups but now they are consistently tight from 3,000 psi down to about 1,900. I believe that without a reg you are blowing excess air out the barrel at the higher end of the tank charge and that extra puff destabilizes the pellet.

My reg is set for 2,000 psi; any more than that and you are just wasting air. Some will be put off by the fact that you will not be able to shoot the heavier pellets with this reg setting but I never had decent accuracy with those the first place. Raw power isn’t needed if you can hit your varmit in the eye at 50 yards! I think a reg raises the enjoyment of the shooting experience and makes the Talons a much higher quality rifle so I also put one on my .25 Talon with 18″ barrel which is now shooting dime-sized groups at 50 yards (best to date is 0.25 in!). Oh, and both rifles have the SuperSear trigger mod which also helps accuracy. But my Talons are the old style pre-Spinloc so all the parts are different now. Furthermore, I understand my particular reg is no longer available so unfortunately I’m not able to suggest what you’d need to order.

Hope this helps some.

i have the quick change on my condor. LOVE it.

I did some tinkering, bought TT Nitrile O breech o rings. removed the old ones and tossed one of the old Breech o rings behind top hat. getting laser flat consistant 760 FPS with 14.3 crosman hollow points. 18 FPE. I got 60 shots, 760 avg, 30 fps EX spread, and 7 FPS SD. Not bad numbers. Starting fill was like 2400, and ending fill 2000. I’ll take that all day. gives me a pile of fills from my 88CF SCBA tank. Probably not even bad to hand pump that.

I doubt you have a micro meter tank. The tank for the talon and SS model has a smaller port in the top hat because they do not put the high flow on that model. In my opinion the only way you will get that many usable shots will be to put a regulator on it.
