Talon SS becomes sluggish
I recently purchased a used Talon SS. The rifle shoots great but I have notice something and was wondering about it. When the air tank has around 2000 to 2400 psi it shoots hard and accurate. If I fiil tank like to 2500 to 2900psi it become sluggish and accuracy drops. What might be the problem?

My Talon SS does have the plastic hammer. I guess I better purchase a heavier hammer and maybe a stouter spring. Thanks to all for the feedback.
When you say ‘used’… how old is your gun? I bought mine used as well, and much later when finally getting a new 18″ barrel to put in, I noticed I have the old plastic hammer, which has to be lighter than the newer metal ones. My gun never liked 2900 psi fills, I’m thinking maybe because of a lighter hammer, so I fill to 27 or so and it shoots fine with PW on #4
You know, if you get a Condor hammer weight you could get a lot
more power out of that thing with less PW when you do a 2,900psi fill….Just a thought…

I have made sure the frame is clean. I have emptied tank and checked to see if valve is hanging up but it feels like it is working right. When I turn the powerwheel to 12 it has plenty of power. I usually shoot with the powerwheel set on 8. Thats when I notice the change when I air up the tank to 2500 to 2900 psi.
If the only difference between it shooting well and shooting poorly is a difference in air-pressure it would be logical to assume the increased air-pressure is the culprit. In this case your spring-power and/or hammer weight are insufficient to hold the valve open long enough to get enough air to the pellet.
You can increase spring-power a bit by adding spacers (try 5mm first, probably a diminishing return after 10 or 15mm). A heavier hammer usually needs more spring-power, otherwise the extra weight is cancelled out by the slower forward movement. A more powerful spring on it’s own will improve matters, but really needs a heavier hammer to complement it. All things in balance is the trick. 🙂
If you haven’t tried it yet…..turn the power wheel to 12 and try again…
If you have tried that already it sounds like the air valve on
the tank….You would have to drain all of the air out of the tank
and compress the air valve to make sure it is working in and
out smoothly…Could also be that the frame is dirty inside where
the hammer slides..Might just need a good cleaning…
Valve lock. The air In the tank is forcing the valve closed too quickly.

The inside of the frame should be lubed with Diver’s silicone after it is cleaned, a hammer sliding in a dry frame will make you turn up the PW to get it to move correctly…
