Talon SS C02 50 yard performance??

Hi everyone,

Im considering purchasing a talon ss with the C02. I was curious as to the performance at 50 yards. This is not going to be a hunting rifle, as it will strictly be for target.

should I look at the 177 or 22?

Any and all opinions welcome!!

One last thing. I noticed that there is a “gun only” and one with open sights. However, all the pictures that I have seen dont show any open sights at all. Am I missing something??

.22 It will do just about anything you want to do.
More guns ok a .177 for paper inside.
More power .22 for long distance paper.
.25 for critters because it is just so much dam fun!

CO2 works fine for paper punching, even at 50 yards. You might want to buy .177 for this appilcation. Or, you can buy both barrels and have fun finding out how they compare. That’s the fun of an Air Force rifle.

I have both CO2 and HPA, but shoot CO2 most of the time. Hpa is a pain. I only have a hand pump which is ok, but I just can’t justify spending all that dough on a tank and other junk, then have to drive all over the state to kiss some dive shop guy’s a$$ to fill it.

CO2 is great until you try HPA. That power rush with accuracy and knockdown power will hook you. I suppose if you are shooting in your house or basement, CO2 will seem powerful.

I’ve pondered this CO2/HPA question as well and stumbled upon this thread. I recently picked up a used Talon that had no tank, just the CO2 adapter. The valve was a little leaky and wonky so I tore it apart, cleaned up the stem passage/internals and made a new stem and seal. The previous owner had been in there before (at LEAST once, by the look of things) and chopped down the spring, so I installed a different one as well. All better now, although I do not yet have a chronagraph to get any quantatative measurements.

I am not certain how I feel about not being able to geek-up this rifle to its potential, but I am pretty certain of how I feel about spending another $450 for a 490cc tank and a used Hill pump 😯 . In the interim, I tore into some old paintball gear and I’m sending 2 HPA tanks out for hydro and a regulator tweak, which will boost their output pressure to about 1300 PSI. I’ll need to reposition the tank so that I can get a sight picture on a scope, but that is do-able as well. I’ll mess with this for a while as I believe that I’ll get the velocity I need for the task at hand (backyard varmintology) and it is a relatively cheap and easily reversible experiment.

On the subject of the valve (by the way, the inlet on the Condor valve is the same diameter as my navel. I compared them.) Does the FAQ have the thread size and pitch for the bottle and valve components? Scratch this request- I found the info here on the forum (where else?)

I’ve seen this thread pop up a few times and have not actually shot my CO2 set up at 50y at anything other than cans so I kept out. I prefer CO2 on my AF guns (except the edge). Why… not all of use are going for pure power. Consistent (lower) power over a longer shoot count are better for me.
When I sit down to shoot, I could go through a coupe hundred pellets and don’t like to carry the CF tank. In my world that means I take my .177 Wolf and an AF with a 20oz co2 tank and i’m good for 800 shots.

I don’t expect the best groups the rifle is capable of past 20-25y while on CO2, even on a warm day, but I can still shoot 4 out of 5 in an inch at 36y with a 12″ .22 barrel and light pellets on a calm day.

Tracer22 – re your old tanks – ask around, the pball shops around here take them in trade for new tanks. I think I got $9 per exchange last time.

I like co2 also but don’t have the setup to refill my tanks. The way I understand it, unless you have a co2 tank that’s not more than 2″ in diameter and thereby excepted from hydro-testing, then when the larger than 2″ in diameter co2 tanks go out of hydro you might as well throw them out and buy new ones. $35 or so for a hydro-test and $25-$30 for a new one. The two 20oz tanks I have are now out of hydro and can’t be refilled, and they look brand new.

So I asked Tony to make me a modified co2 adapter to accept a higher output pressure from an hpa tank. I attached Tony’s adapter to my TSS and screwed on a 45ci 3000psi tank with an 1800 psi JDS reg and it works very well. LOP is about as much as the standard AF tank. Doesn’t shoot nearly as hard as the AF tank with the standard AF valve but you can shoot a lot of shots with little deviation in velocity before that tank goes off the reg.

I recently dvr’d a Paul Capello American Airgunner rerun where he and Crystal compared his condor on co2 against the AF condor tank with the hi-flow valve. At 75 degrees with 26.2 grain pellets the condor achieved 22fpe (edited) on co2 and 56fpe with the AF tank. This was with a 24″ barrel.

To answer your question, if not used for hunting then get the 177 and if using co2 for 50 yd shoots, as Harry stated above, you would need a lot of elevation to get there with a 12″ barrel. Capello shot at 40 yds and really had to raise the elevation a lot with the 24″ barrel with a 26.2 grain 22 pellet. But accuracy was excellent.

The only reason to own a .20 as far as it being better is in a power limted spring gun, were at the top power you get a little more velocity compared to a .22, but with the air force rifle there is no need for the .20 because you can make the .22 do what ever you want form light to heavy pellets, not to say the .20 is not a cool caliber. but there is more pellet availability with the .22 over the .20 , and there are cheaper pellets available also.

I have only shot co2 in a crosman semi auto pistol, and a Sheridan rifle with the small co2 cartridges, and it sucked compared to high pressure air, the bulk tank is probably better for this but is it better for temp change, or for when you shoot fast and the temp changes in the co2 and impact go’s all over the place. ????

I vote for HPA in .177 for a nice plinker, or .22 if you think you might want to do some hunting with it. but you can buy the .177 and get a .22 barrel later if you want.

Allot of the places sell it with the co2 adapter , so you could try it with co2 , then get a scuba tank or a scuba bottle later , so its really no big deal either way. but i promise you when you have shot it with hpa you wont go back to co2,, unless your out of air , 😆

Oh and co2 is silent compared to hpa because, yosu cant get any velocity out of it. 😉

You can turn down the hpa to the co2 velocity (500 fps give or take) also, and get a ton of shots with a very low prssure fill. ( under 2300 psi for a .22) ( under 1900 psi for a .177 )and get allot of fills out of a 3300 psi scuba bottle that you can find used for $ 80 to $125 bucks or so .

Stick with the standard HPA bottle for paper. where i am i’m limmited to 12 foot pound so 40yrd max for paper or small quarry. from one fill i get around 400 shots and my 3ltr dive bottle should give me 3 good fills.
C02 is ok but as said its the power output and temperature thats the problem, the later been the main issue unless your in a warm place and even then…. . Al be moving from C02 on my Crosman AS2250 to HPA soon as due to the variation in fps cos its just too unpredictable.

I own 177 but from what I’ve heard 20 has a great balance of trajectory and power because all the weight is contained in a longer narrower pellet compared to a 22.

I orderred a .20 caliber co2 gun and they sent me a hpa tank also, I bout shit my pants, thanks pyramid, I would go with the 22 cause you can get alittle more speed for the long 50 yrd shots and a scope, but then 177 is alot more ecconomical and may shoot flatter, I am not for sure, and like others say the co2 works with the temperature so below sixty it will be really slow.

I used my Co2 condor. 22 with great success-took one groundhog and a lot of pest birds-black birds starlings and sparrows. It took three shots to put the groundhog to sleep, but it was out about 45yds, too.

For best performance of Co2, the minimum temperature should be 80 degrees, good at 90 and best performance around 100 degrees, because the gun doesn’t cool as quickly and warms back up much faster.

Use both and have the best of both worlds, Co2 is silent compared to HPA.

I bought my Talon SS that included the free CO2 adapter. I have shot both HPA anc CO2. Since I am primarily a paper puncher, I LIKE shooting with CO2. I can get 350 shots from a 12 oz tank, while only 50 from HPA. Frankly, I think HPA is a pain in the a$$. I have both .22 and .177 barrels.

Don’t listen to the HPA freaks. CO2 is just as much fun.

Well, I have a TSS in .177, and I love it!!! Pellets are cheap, I mean REALLY cheap, and easy to find..Wide selection available too 😀 😀 .177 is caliber used for competition, so no question about accuracy..I use HPA, and have posted some pix of shot groups on other posts here….CO2 would be just as accurate , and much quieter..I’d say GO FOR the .177.. 😀 😀 Good thing about AF guns is the ease with which you can change calibers and power sources !!!

I had a CO2 setup on my .22 TSS I used it for squirrel patrol in the yard. It was much quieter then the HPa, but definitely doesn’t launch the lasers like the HPa does. I dropped plenty of squirrels with it, but I wouldn’t count on dropping something at 50 yards though. Most of my kills came at less then 20 yards, for a 50 yard shot you probably have to lob it in like a Mortar 😎 😎

yep, find the right 177 hollow point and you have a vermin killer inside 30 yards… otherwise you get plenty of paper shots on 177.
