Q:

Talon SS Numbers!

Howdy Folks!

I just wanted to post up some info regarding my findings on a new Talon SS .22 I picked up a couple weeks back in case it may help somebody else out…

After a LOT of playing around with the TH and PW I got ‘er dialed in just right! Well for me anyhow.

I realistically was looking for between 700 and 750 fps with a decent curve and a reasonable shot count. I always keep my expectations a little low. Makes for a less stressful life.:)

So I sat down and played with the TH and the Wheel of Power (or rather ‘lack-of’ in my case.)

Now, my feeler gauge set is in limbo somewhere along with a ton of other shit I haven’t seen since 1981, so I figured I could still wing it. I ‘eyeballed’ the TH setting with an electric set o’ calipers and some extensive chrony work.

I started out the TH at one turn up from bottom and went from there in slight movements outward. Chrony. Repeat. I’m guessing it’s at about .080…

Well… Here’s Johnny!

15.9 .22 JSB non-sorted. Washed and lubed. PW @ 4.

NOT BAD!!!!!

Filled after 70 shots and tank was at 2100psi from 2800psi!!

Couldn’t leave well enough alone so I gave 2700psi a try…!

I like this session too! Maybe a little better! Up and running and into the sweet spot a little quicker.

Filled after 60 shots and tank was at 2100psi from 2700psi!

This works for me!

I also played around extensively with the ‘Lack-of-Power Wheel’ and found less than 13 fps spread from setting 4 to 12…

19.86 fpe is plenty good for a rig of this nature, and the consistency is great for a non-reg set up! Very pleased!

The one thing I haven’t had the time to do is any accuracy testing, but I am fairly confident things will go well.:D

Thanks!
Cris

Srench,

Yes, the top hat setting is key.

You’re most of the way there. The important part of the puzzle is the chrony work…

Assuming you have a chrony, start experimenting.

A decent place to start is to screw the top hat all the way down (towards the bottle,) and back it out one full turn. Take care with the grub screws on the TH as to not overtighten. Take it easy, and then apply loctite when you’re happy with the results.

Now start chronying until you’re happy. YMMV. Not all guns will react the same.

Check the ‘Quick Reference’ section under ‘Top Hat Adjustment’ and you’re off to the races!:)

Thanks!
Dutch

So Dutch, just moving your Top Hat valve made a big improvement in shot consistency and # of shots? I’m already filling to only 2700psi, and I keep the PW on 3.

You say it’s now only about .08 or 8 thousands of an inch away from the air tank?

I’d like to adjust mine, so I’m just trying to clarify what you did and how to do it. Mine is brand new, and from the factory it seems that the TH is set about 3/32″ from the tank. So I just need to unscrew it and move it much closer. .08″ is almost touching, but is all of this right?

Thanks

The more area the less restriction

quote Dutch:

Thanks Fellas!

In the world of pre-charge, a .22 will be more efficient than a .177, all things be equal.

When your tophat is in its “happy place,” your power wheel will have little to no effect on velocity in the majority of its range.

Thanks!
Cris

Re: Efficiency, Would you say the same thing in comparing the .22 to the .25?

Nice numbers, I try to do the same thing as well…

70 shots in 700psi, about 10psi per shot, I am set up to use 15psi per shot, I like your numbers better! 😀

very concise post….. 😯 amazing in .22, at the 2700 psi strings the overall low dump of gas pressure after that many shots. I find the power wheel on my .177 TSS also is quite elusive I guess due to the barrel length being so short, I keep it now fixed on 8 using heavies and like on 7 or 6 for baracuda/kodiacs. I am “jonesing” to see if a .177 variant is as efficient…probably not as..need to chrony… ❓

Perhaps, but the objective here was for the greatest efficiency with the maximum number of shots and lowest spread equalling in optimum accuracy.

The TSS, set up as noted above, already has passed through several TR’s @ 50 yards with great accuracy.

I have found that the lowest possible velocity while still maintaining your desired end result is generally the best way to go. 😀

Thanks!

They seem low to me. When i had a 12″ barrel, I had no problem getting 830 fps with 15.9 gr. JSB’s.

Correct. 12″ barrel!

So a stock talon ss has a 12″ barrel? If that’s correct you guys are getting some very sweet numbers.

Thanks Fellas!

Did a little shooting and I am very happy with the accuracy and consistency thus far.

Drops ’em right in there at 50 yards and closer.

My customized Rapid is gonna be jealous!

Thanks!
Cris

I agree. They are just about the same number I got with the JSB’s. And with 14.3g crosman premiers you will be up around 790 fps. I really believe that the stock Talon SS – 12″ barrel is about a 20fpe gun. Notice I said stock, no valve mods.

Very nice. That low shot can be caused from the hammer chattering down toward the breech or not closing the bolt completely.

Nice numbers 😀

Welcome
