Talon SS question
I’ve been reading up a little on some of the high performance pellet guns. I had a few questions that I hoped you all could help with.
I really want a silent gun that can take out some of the larger racoons and possums plaguing my trash cans. I was thinking about just using a legally suppressed .22lr with subsonic ammo, But I really don’t want to have an NFA firearm and all the bs that goes wih owning one, and it would also be against the law to fire one with-in city limits, i do not belive it is against the law to shoot an air rifle.
So I was thinking about going with a shrouded AF SS in .22 or .25. They seem to be rather expensive, but if the peformance is there it would be worth it to me. I don’t want to buy one and then waste money upgrading it later, I’d rather just buy what I need for the start.
So would a standard 12″ AF .22 SS take out a racoon or possum at 30-50 yards?
If I upgraded to a 12″ .25 barrel would it do better? Would I need to change out anything else to enhance the performance like the air cylinder to upgrade to a .25.
I’d like to keep the barrel as short as possible (preferrably 12″) but I still need terminal performance, so please let me know what you would suggest for a 30-50 yard urban possum/racoon hunter. A longer barrel is not out of the question, but noise is, I need it to be quiet so I don’t alarm/wake-up my neighbors at night.

One for the money (Talon SS .22) and two for the show (Tony .25 AAA). if they’re tenacious or far, to the .25 I go (when I get the Steve C. furniture in red/black lam, the .22 will be a “stunner”) . . .
When this topic comes up, me and some others here usually suggest the same thing… the stock TSS with the 18″ barrel is just plain sweet. With a 5 min swap you can count on adding 90+ fps, and easily break the 30 ft lb barrier with Kodiaks. I cronied mine when I first got the 18″ and did 34 fpe, pretty nice. If sound isn’t a huge issue, you can just get a foot of 1″ alumi tubing for a couple of bucks, cap it, and it’s about the same sound as a stock SS, with just a different sound. More power using the same amount of air, not a bad deal, and your gun remains relatively short. It’s the best single thing I’ve done to my gun. (so far)
Yeah, I agree with what some people have said about the Talon SS having more than enough power for your pest-ridding application. Though it was nice to have raw power, I decided to power down my Condor to shoot 14.3 grain Crosman Premiers and Benjamin diablos in the 750-780 FPS range. Let me tell you, with that power in .22 caliber, the pellets still managed to blow through a pallet’s 1/2″ side … at 50 yards! 😯 So, with that perspective, you can down a raccoon even at that distance with a .22 Talon SS if you connect the pellet in its noggin. With my Condor transformed into a Condor SS – shooting pellets at the above mentioned velocities – I now get up to 70 usable shots if I’m shooting within 30 yards.
Do not know if it is normal, but I have had my Talon SS for 2 weeks now. I Keep my power wheel at 3 and can hit and take down crows and rabbits at 50 yds, along with getting a couple hundred shots before a refill. It has more then enough power for what I am doing. Along with baffeling, venting the bushing and frame, supper quiet. I am using Crosman .22 pointed premium. It really is more then I expected. Thanks to the input from this forum I am one happy camper. Do not think the varments are though!!!!!!
A custom shroud runs about $200
Or if you have the skills and know how you can make your own.
Is the shroud something I can buy and install myself, or is this a custom ($$) type thing that will make the rifle a lot more expensive?

I’d recommend a head shot, but an SS in .22 would do it.
Not a coon, but a (small) marmot; similar tenacity, but . . . a brain pan IS brain pan (and drain pan). Baffle the gun & your paranoid neighbor will never know, unless he/she is watching (“how-to” info is available on this site). Question: How can a liberal survive in the great state of Texas?
Don’t let anyone kid you… Stock Talon SS with .22 Beeman Kodiak pellets… just last week… One shot from 40 yards…
Where I live, discharging an air rifle or paintball gun in city limits is against the law (good thing I moved to the county :)). If your neighbor is that pissy about you just cleaning a rifle in your garage, they would probably not hesitate to call if they saw or even heard your air rifle. Check your local laws first.

eventhough I live in Texas we have anti gunners that live next door. they called PD one day when I was cleaning my AR-15 in the garage. Shooting a 22 with-in city limits would get me arrested and I’d loose my CHL, there isn’t much a police office could do about me shooting a “pellet gun” since it is not a “firearm” under the legal deffinition of firearm.

shooting in a city…… well I doubt it matters whether it is a PB or airgun
Imagine you are a slightly nervous neighbor, some guy is waving his ‘gun’ around sniping starlings, well you don’t know any better and you call it in…… well see how it can go?
Go ask around and see what the deal is perhaps you are surrounded by gun-friendly neighbors! we can only hope eh 🙂

I’d consider trapping for a number of reasons. It’s far cheaper and more effective (most animal control offices will loan you the traps and tell you how to set them up). If you wound one shooting it (you’re going to sooner or later if you shoot at them enough….) the chances of your life getting real complex are great. The noise and wounded or dead animal are likely to get noticed and are sure to cause concerns.
Hunting of any sort with a silenced firearm is poaching in most states, no matter what the reason. Unless you have a Depradation Permit specifically covering the situation, you’ve got problems. If caught, expect to loose the gun and have lots of grief.
Before I’d invest a grand on a chance to have a bit of fun and maybe pick up a police record in the process, I’d call your city or county animal control…….
