Q:

Talon SS upgrade to .25 24" Advice needed

Hi Guys,
Am sitting on a bunch of .25 pellets because my .25 marauder was converted to a .257

I still like the .25 caliber, so I was thinking about buying a AirForce 24″ .25 barrel and dropping it into my old talon SS.

Over the last 4 years I rarely shoot the talon ss because of it’s lack of power compared to my .22 SS S410. But… If the talon was converted to a .25 I would shoot it more in situations where the wind was blowing too much for the .22 and I didn’t have the safe distance to shoot the .257

Questions:

Anyone have an idea on what fps (with JSB .25 pellets) I can expect by swapping out just the .22 barrel for a 24″ .25 Barrel? 850 fps? I’d like to around 920 if possible. (still using the talon tank for lots of shots compared to a condor tank) Can I gain anything by polishing and porting out the talon valve?

I am also thinking about using my existing co2 adaptor and hooking it up to a small 3000psi paintball tank regulated to 1,800 psi. Any ideas what I might get out of that with the .25 jsb in the 24″ barrel. If I were to do this I would not care about shot count because I would have my Stikman scba fill system connected to the foster on the paintball regulator so I can easily just top off the gun after every few shots if needed.

I will be using the talon setup it to shoot ground squirrels from a bench from 40 to 80 yards. and I really like the idea of having a fill nipple on the gun so I don’t have to unscrew the tank to fill it.

Anyone run the co2 adaptor higher than 1,800psi? did it blow the burst disk out?

Will I need to add a hammer weight, so the talon can open the valve on the co2 adaptor if it is pushed from 850psi to 1,800 psi?

If a regulated solution using the co2 adaptor is not an option, I was wondering if I could just swap the valve out of the co2 adaptor and use it on my talon tank because it looks like it uses a condor valve stem. After some research it seems some of the valve parts in the co2 adaptor are different than the condor valve.

Thanks in advance for any advice and ideas.

Roger

Stock Talon SS purchased around 2007 12″ .22
My tank is the standard talon tank
I also have the co2 adaptor

I’m shooting a 12″ barrel with oe spring and hammer. It’s shooting 877@ 2500 pw at 8 oe condor valve and stem. Sorry that’s bout all I can do for you at this time. Good luck with your endeavor for higher fps.

Ok so I swapped in the co2 adaptor and a 17ci bottle aired to 3000psi not really sure on output could be 2000 or 2200. First shot out @ 8 on the power wheel 662fps. Adjusted the pw to 12, 2nd shot 701 #3 720. I get more chrono results later. just not a bunch of .25 on hand at the moment. Ammo is JSB 25.39. So I got off 14 more shots nothing over 732 fps with power wheel at 12. Just checked the output of the reg it shows 2000psi. Was going to put my 2500psi JDS reg on but for some strange reason the 3k burst disc blew at 2200psi. Brand new reg never had air in the bottle till trying today.

Thanks a bunch.

I found this post with a picture that shows the condor valve guide along side the valve guide from the co2 adaptor.

The CO2 adaptor has the condor high flow top hat but the valve seat diameter is about 7.9mm and will function only at low pressure.
Even with a 100 gram hammer it will struggle to open up with the standard hammer spring above 150 bar pressure.

When I ordered my barrel I also ordered the hammer weight (incase I needed it). After this post and yours I’m thinking that it might need extra weight that to open the valve at 2.2k

I wonder if that is what is happening to you ❓

I wonder if you can test that theory by dry firing the gun and listening to the sound. Shoot it until it comes off the reg as the pressure drops and see if the gun gets louder. You could also shoot over the chroney, but you mentioned you didn’t have a lot of pellets. I am guessing this would let you test as the tank pressure decreases, and see if it gets to a point where the valve can overcome valve lock ( If that is what might be happening)

Are you shooting the 18″ barrel?

Do you have the hammer weight installed?

I really appreciate all the help and input.

Thanks,

Roger

I use the pistol tank with 24″ 25 cal barrel with good results and a regulated HPA or co2 on the 22 cal no crono yet…..

Nope never shot the co2 valve hpa in my Talon.I do have a couple of 22xx based bottle guns. I run a 17 ci 2000psi reg on my .25 but I don’t shoot it at 900. I shoot it around 750 and use a short hammer spring for the back yard.

The valve stem od on my co2 adapter measures .250. my condor valve stem is .245.

Thanks, the stem on my c02 adaptor also measures .250

Have you tried running the co2 adaptor HPA yet? What reg pressure?

I went ahead and ordered up the 24″ .25 barrel and a hammer weight. The barrel won’t arrive until 5/8 I am Leaving on my big hunting trip on the morning of the 13th. I am cutting this close. Still trying to figure out what reg pressure to set at 2.2 is my latest guess, to hopefully get to 900 or above with the jsb .25. I need to get the hpa bottle and reg set before the barrel arrives. It looks like I will only get one shot at testing the reg over a chrony before my squirrel blasting trip. Any advice on setting the reg target pressure (when attached to the co2 adaptor ) would be appreciated

If my reg attempt fails my backup plan is to just shoot the 24″ .25 with my stock talon tank and hope I get close to 900 fps, or just shoot what ever it will do.

Thanks,

Roger

Looks like the burst disk may not be an issue According to the posts it might handle 2200 psi.

Interesting post on the etac reg
http://www.talonairgun.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=15865&start=80

From the chart it looks like I would need the reg set at 2000psi minimum to get close to 900fps, 2,200 psi may be better. It would be great if I can do this with my existing AF CO2 adaptor. I still don’t know if the burst disk on that valve can handle the 2k without bursting.

I still would like to know more about the valve on the CO2 adaptor vs the standard condor valve. I read somewhere that a spring was lighter or something?

Should order a hammer weight when I order the .25 24″ barrel, just incase the tallon hammer can’t open the valve?

Thanks,

Roger
