Q:

Talon SS Valve Polishing/Porting

I have an extra TSS valve and am going to polish and port it per the MikeMV and Robert instructions in the Quick Reference forum. A couple of questions before I get started.

1. Do I have to do anything with the burst disc, or just leave it alone?

2. The instructions suggest you do not try to drill the valve stem ID unless you employ a bench drill/drill press with appropriate part holders. I have a drill press, and can make something to hold the parts being drilled, but thought ‘d ask if there’s an inexpensive tool/clamp/vise I can buy to hold various shapes and sizes of parts.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

what kind of #s do you expect to get?

the main benefit of a polish-port is primarily consistency, velocity secondarily.

with the stuff available now, id use a tt 1 piece stem, a new hiflo stem from af, or if youre lookin for a bit less, i would use a dremel/emery/flitz process to slightly open up the stem id.

btw, ive an xtra ported/polished hiflo with a removable TH extension i can part with if all else fails…

Condor valve stems don’t cost to much, if I sometimes remember correctly. I think the top hat is extra and then too the set screws were extra. You might want to get the o-ring for inside the brass valve stem guide.
I got 3 extra high flo stems for my use as it is a pain to have to reset the tophat.

I used a dremel end mill to shape the stem air intake holes, on an angle from the rear. Try not to take any off the structural sides of the holes. Doing it by hand I probably enlarged the holes a tiny bit to the sides also but I haven’t had any bent stems yet. I figure that by angeling the holes in the direction of the flow, there is less turbulence. I believe I got a slight 10-15 FPS increase but didn’t record before and after. After the hole reeming I honed the edges and polished the stems and top hats with crocus cloth then a polish. Just clean up the surface. You don’t want to make it much smaller.

PS. you might try just porting the intake holes of the talon stem before trying to drill out the I’D. Just a thought.
