Talon SS VS RWS 48
Hi new here and have a question. I have a RWS 48 in 22 and it hits hard for a springer. I can hit a beer caps at 35 yards almost every time. I have a Talon SS coming in a few days. It also is in .22. From what I have seen it has about the same power as the RWS 48. Will the Talon reach out more then the RWS 48 and be as accurate at the longer distance say 50 yards? Thanks

That is the best route, take time to learn the rifle all the while continuing to research, learn and relearn before you start tinkering. If you read my other post you’ll quickly see that I have a high regard for those who aren’t afraid to dive into something foreign, especially when there is some risk involved, head own and make it better. That is the spirit that facilitated the existence of almost every thing good in life.

Well before I tune it I would like to see what it will do stock. I like to tinker myself so maybe down the road I will do a little tuning myself :biggrinn: I need to get a pump and play a bit first.
Here a thought, Tony at Talon Tunes seems to have very reasonable prices for tuning. From the specs. on his tuned rifles and the overwhelming voice of appreciation for his work by those on this forum an YouTube.
Here is a video of a .22 Condor he tuned. No arguing with accuracy and sound is somewhat noticeable in the video.

For the most informative information the following YouTube Channel is a must, especially the “22 Condor Mods” video and the “Airforce Condor Shroud Comparison”. These both let you see what is possible. onebaddj, the one in the video, did many of the modifications himself with parts purchased from talontunes.com, I think.

Of course since many of the people I write about are on the forum, they could tell you these things themselves but I sure they don’t want to toot their own horns. I say that because I’ve seen them give a lot of help to people here but might feel pointing you to their videos and work is SP (Shameless Plugging). :biggrinn:
Whether you decide to modify your rifle yourself or not, I think it’s worth considering saving a few bucks and send it to Tony. With High Pressure Air safety is key. At least talk to him about what you might need.
Disclaimer: I haven’t met, don’t know nor have I ever bought anything from Tony, YET. However i will have a “DNS” Condor soon and have done plenty of research on the people here that offer resources for HPA Air Rifles, (A lot!!! You will be very hard pressed to find negative review on any of TalonTunes products of modifications. Just search YouTube for Talon Tunes modifications.

I have only subjective impressions on noise. The .22 Condor SS, shooting subsonic, is quiet enough that my neighbors don’t notice. The RWS is also this quiet. The RWS is running at a much lower power level. So, you get a lot more power from the Condor SS for a similar noise level.
Shooting light pellets at supersonic levels will be loud. Unlike the RWS, the Talon or Condor is capable of this.

P.S. The RWS is capable of much higher power if you “Diesel” it with some WD-40 in the chamber. Much louder, not recommended.
Well before I start to tinker I need to get a pump. Then it looks like I should save up for a crony. After that it will be time to tinker. How load is the Talon SS vs your RWS 54? Are they close to the same?

I’ve got an RWS model 54 (similar mechanicals to the model 48). The model 54 is a great shooter. It is a very refined springer. It now sits lonely and unused since I’ve acquired PCP guns.
My first PCP was a Condor SS, which required all sorts of tinkering to get it to shoot the way I like. As you can tell from this forum, AF guns are great platforms for customization. If you are a hacker at heart, the PCPs are great.
If you are not a hacker, PCPs and the AF guns in particular, can be pretty frustrating.

P.S. Just a note on limits to hacking on PCP airguns – there is one part of the PCP that ought not be hacked – the high pressure air cylinder. Always use high pressure air storage cylinders that are designed for the application. Leave safety devices in place (burst discs). Stay within pressure specifications. Had to say that…
PCP airguns are tunable. You need a chronograph to determine the velocity of the pellet.
You are in for a lot of fun but this is not a springer.
Your question cannot be answered universally, but the Talon CAN be tuned to shoot as you like it.
Springers are mostly plug and play for the majority of users. PCPs need more attemtiom if you want to express their potential.
I suggest you start reading this forum and start learning about chrony, tuning, and all the fun stuff of the hobby.

My targets are beer CAPS not cans. 😀 Will the talon drop off more at the 50 yard mark vs the RWS 48? The 48 with 14.3 pellets works well. I would like to know if the Talon with say 20+ grain pellets will have the same speed as the 48 with 14.3. Thanks
The Talon will hit well beyond 35yds.
Power will be more adjustable and dependimg on the barrel length.
Shooting is way smoother than a springer for the same power.
Plus if your target size is a beer can, you can shoot that thing at 100yds with proper tuneup and pellets.

Well I got my hand pump today :8: Just to let everyone know the talon SS in .22 is a lot quieter then the RWS 48 in .22. On #6 on the power wheel it looks to have the same power too. I shot at some pine board and they both just about left the same blowout in the back of it.
