Q:

Talon Stubby .25….Am I Asking Too Much?

Acquired this Talon .25 Stubby (pictured below) awhile back from the original owner – not sure if this is an Extreme or not and frankly haven’t torn anything down to try and find out. Haven’t got a ton of trigger time with it due to life stuff, but have got to shoot it a little bit.

Here’s the issue – Even with the R&L shroud, it’s too loud to be considered backyard friendly and I have a squirrel problem that needs to be resolved. I am also shooting JSB Exact King 25.39gr pellets. My neighbors are all pretty cool, but I don’t want to give them any reason to question me. Because of this, I haven’t done much shooting in the back yard at all. I have already talked with Hoot and I have vented the front bushing and under the frame itself, but this thing still sounds like an air cannon. The shroud and venting def quiets the report, but still loud. I owned an FX 500 for a short time, and if I recall correctly, it was maybe half the loudness, and I heard more hammer slap than anything. My memory could be wrong though.

What other options do I have or does anybody have any recommended advice?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Well, I decided to part ways with my Talon Stubby….just wasn’t willing to drop any more money into it to still only have a single shot. So I bought a cricket .25 instead :biggrinn:

Thanks again for everybody’s input and ideas….much appreciated!

Have you tried using the micrometer tank? Less power but it should be quite. I like my for target shooting.

Yeah, my Talon Stubby is just a Talon, not the Talon SS, therefore no additional quieting. If I can find a used Talon Tunes 9″ shroud for cheap enough, I will try that as I have heard it does amazing things.

However, I’m not going to drop another $215+ into trying to make this what I would consider backyard friendly. I’ll probably just sell this and get something else at that point. Really like the gun, but not wanting to piss off the neighbors.

Well, i Just ordered a .25 12″ barrel for my .22 Talon SS from Leah at AirForce. I have the old style Top Hat that has a straight body. This will be good and quiet, the same as the .22! I haven’t counted how many shots if get from the .22, but can’t imagine getting 15% less with the old restrictive top hat. No need for secondary LDC in my case.

txaggie 929 , I have a .25 Talon SS shooting Baracua’s Extreme 28.40 gr. pellets . My power wheel is set on #4 setting and my max fill is at 1500 psi .
I shoot it down to 800 psi and then refill back up to 1500 psi . I’m able to make kills out to 37 yds. with no problems . At this shooting set-up I have
removed my LDC to return my Talon SS back to its normal length for shooting in my backyard . The LDC is not needed at this set-up and without it
my gun is still quiet enough for backyard friendly shooting . Hope this info will be of some help for you .

Can you show us what style of Baffles are in the R&L shroud?
Also what the others suggest and drop the air pressure down to at least 1200psi. Also try shooting the heaviest pellet you have.
My Talon SS in .22 is very quiet. All i hear is the hammer striking the top hat.

Couldn’t tell you what the size of the tophat is, have no idea if its modified. I know I’m not much help on this lol. Have no idea where my calipers are either since we just moved about 2 months ago. All I know is that this was a built and sold by R&L and that’s about it. I have already called and they have no record of what the specs were as it was sold in-store in person vs being shipped.

There is no o-ring behind the tophat either. Is there a certain size that’s recommended?

I prob just need to break down and buy a chrony as alot of this is probably just a big guessing game at this point.

AS someone says running your gun at 1500 down to 1000 psi will massively reduce the noise. Big difference in noise between 3000 psi and 2,000 and then again between 2000 and 1500. You should still have enough power at 1500 psi to smoke squirrels. You will find your POI drops if you run low tank pressure, just adjust your scope up a few clicks. An oring behind the tophat will also reduce the noise. Any Oring should do, preferably small enough to go on tight.

I’ve owned a .25 Talon Stubby, and it can be made very quiet!

You will have to use an after-market ldc because the R&L tube won’t do the job with the simple baffle cups in use, or were in use when I owned the gun.

Contact Neil Clague and see what can be had. Mine was made by GTBJ but he no longer comes here. It can be done, but it needs a more sophisticated baffle system for the amount of air coming out of the Talon.

I’m sure that Tony at Talon Tunes has a moderator that will work as well! Not cheap, but anything worth having seldom is.

How big is the bore of your tophat? I find the size of your tophat makes a big difference to the sound. If you have a good moderator, vented bushings etc, then the sound must be coming from the tophat. Do you have a rubber Oring behind the tophat? That is an easy and cheap fix. Doesn’t make a huge difference, but noticeable. But I think it must be your tophat. Could it be a modified tophat?

With a stubby I’d think 1000 PSI might be enough. Don’t worry about going to low. If one pellet fails to exit just cock and fire again…IN A SAFE DIRECTION ❗ If you accidently loaded a second pellet and it doesn’t exit, you might need to pump it up a bit. 🙄

Never thought about doing that. Thought that it prob needed to be at max pressure for best shooting. Then again, not having a chrony to test out kinda throws that theory out the window.

Lower the PSI A LOT and give it a try.

If that helps, slowly increase PSI until it gets loud again. Then don’t fill it that high again.

I don’t have a a chrony, but I have only set the power wheel anywhere from 4-6….it is def not maxed out.

What fps is it set at?
