Q:

TalonP tank regulator vendor?

Hello all,

I have been doing my due diligence and searched the forum but I am still confused and can’t find a straight answer, so I am asking for help as I am no expert.

Do you know where/whom I can buy a regulator for the standard TalonP tank/valve?
I contacted JDS but he seems to have only regs for the condor/talon tank.

Is there any vendor I can purchase directly?

Why for theTalonP tank?
I am trying to get a compact setup for hunting that will fit in my pack.
I have found a good tune around 2000 psi but if I fill to 3000psi for more shots I get a really steep bell curve.
So I’d like to get a 3000psi reg set to 2000psi

The standard tank (condor talon) is just too big for my purpose.

Any advice?
Thank you

Cheers
Chris

Yep, that is exactly the one of the two I bought.
It is now fitted with the R&L extreme valve.

Thanks Chris, that was a great over view, it helped a me a lot.

Looking on the Altaros site it now appears that they’ve added a suitable reg to their line up

“Gunpower/ AirForce regulator for paintball bottle”
“The regulator is the same as regulator (with thread 18x 1,5 mm on valve), other thread is 5/8 x (18 UNF)”

Hello Hoot!

Well, I should have taken some pics before assembling!
Anyway, I am not mech genius and if I made it, anybody can.

I bought the reg for AF valves with the paintball thread on the tank side since the talonp tank is basically a paintball hpa tank:
http://www.altaros.cz/en/gunpower/20-gunpower-airforce-regulator-for-paintball-bottle#/

It was very simple, just remove the valve assembly from the AF tank and add the regulator in between.
No need for adapters (which is a great bonus in terms of work, connections and potential leaks)
Two o’rings, tighten it shut and there it is.

There is only one adjustment screw at the bottom of the reg (inside the tank) so it takes a few fills/empty to get it where you want it.
It helps if you have a gauge on the AF valve so you can actually see the regulated pressure in the chamber.
The gauge on reg is for the tank pressure.

I bought the Extreme Valve without the gauge and I regret, but I think I should be able to add one later.

The reg works great, very consistent on my tests with the standard valve; few fps difference, always below 8fps and mostly around 3-6fps.
I haven’t chronied the Extreme Valve yet.

Price was around $140 or so. I bought 3 regs that time and I think I got a discount. (the other 2 are AF regular tank and one for the marauder)

They have a nice video for the assembly on the link I posted.
Service is great and shipping was fast. I cannot complain about anything so far.
If nothing else I highly recommend Altaros and R&L.

The problem with the talonP is tank size and I hated having such a steep bell curve when looking for power.
I’d rather have some well determined number of consistent shots and not having to worry about drops.
It’s a compromise as always. Maybe loose a bit of power to gain 10 powerful shots within few fps spread. Not bad.

I wish I had a scuba tank as pumping for tuning is a bitch! But I am close to where I want this gun to be.

I hope this helped. I will post some chrony when I get to run the Extreme Valve properly.

Cheers
Chris

:hoot:

Chris, can you tell us a bit more about the Alteros reg? Cost, hard to install, how to adjust, fitting, pics, etc?

My TalonP is producing 72 fpe with 49gr slugs. I would consider putting a reg on it if the cost and time involved is not prohibitive.

Thanks!

I have eventually made it to purchase the R&L Extreme Valve.

WOW!

Now my setup consists of a TalonP tank with an Altaros Reg and the Extreme valve.
I need to adjust the reg for a lower pressure because right now it is way too hot for my .22

Even with the power down the lowest that valve is a true tornado!

I might switch to a .25 barrel at one point, to take better advantage of the power now available.
I also might need to replace the breech seals as I can tell there is a lot of loss there when the valve opens up.

Maybe the .22 is just too restricting for this valve.

I can’t wait to finish this project for my compact hunter rifle.

Cheers
Chris

Thanks man!

I was wondering about that valve just yesterday. Looks very tempting 🙂

:hoot:

I believe you could expect roughly 150 fps increase from the “Extreme” valve. He’s kind of proud of it, pricewise, but as always, you get what you pay for.

Chris…contact Randy at R & L and inquire about his “Extreme” Condor valve. Think of it as a Condor Valve +P+…..I never could figure out, or see, what was done to modify that valve but it was a genuine velocity multiplier!

Ok, so I just wanted to report the progress since I did not get any response on the issue.

I bought an Altaros regulator for Airforce, that has a paintball thread on the tank side.
This allowed me to have a regulated small tank perfect for hunting and fitting in a backpack.

Of course the valve side of the regulator is the standard tank size (not paintaball) so I could not use the talonP valve assembly.
I decided to do some Frankenstein work.

I took apart the talonP valve assembly and a regular TalonSS valve assembly and transplanted the talonP inner valve parts into the standard valve housing on the TalonSS.
The talonP spring+delrin valve is longer that the regular TalonSS spring+delrin setup. Fortunately the collar on the bottom of the valve on the TalonSS is long and can be adjusted. I set it about 3/4 in. This compresses the spring a bit more that on the TalonP assembly, but seems to work just fine.
Maybe the delrin will suffer from it in time, but this is more of an experiment that a long term fix.

I assembled everything and pumped up to 3000psi. The regulator is set around 2000psi or so (hard to tell since I don’t have a gauge on the ariforce valve (not spinloc).

I have a .22 12″ barrel. Set power to 8-10 and got the Crossman Premiers 14.3gr flying at 920fps regulated!
The Crowmagnum 18.3gr where flying at 790fps and the Rabbit magnum 25.something at about 670 fps.

Not bad without tuning power/tophat. I am probably wasting some air, but the regulated shots fps is so minimally spread that I can take around 15 shots at that power with no drop or curve.

The plan is to get a condor valve so I can reverse the Frankenstein job on the Talonp/TalonSS valve.
Actually if anybody has a Condor valve assembly around, let me know.

So it is possible to have a regulated and short TalonP.
The JDS setup did not appear to come out as short as the Altaros because of additional adapters.

I would really like to find a regulator with a paintball female thread for the talonP valve assembly. But I haven’t been able to figure this out and apparently nobody else is doing this…

Well thank you and cheers
Chris
