Test/Sight-in dilemma for .22 ss with 18in barrel

So, I shagged ass early from work today 😈 to sight in my newly recieved .22 TSS with 18in barrel. This thing is nasty. I tested beeman cromags, diablo exacts and crosman premiers. Those cromags make a nasty-ass THWACK against the tree I was using as a backstop. They all seemed to group pretty decent (all within 1/2-1/4in) from the distance I was shooting at. My dilemma however is this…I noticed as I was shooting from about 45yds and through the scope it looked like the pellets were spiralling out to the target on the crowmags. I read on the web that this is basically an illusion on recoiless rifles. True?? Didn’t really notice this on the other ones. I was shooting with the PW at about 6/7. Anyone got anything on this? I was trying to look through some of the old posts to see if someone had the same problem.
Also, so what do I have to do- move out even farther to see which pellet outshines the rest? I thought 45 yards would be enough to see a noticeable difference between all these but I guess not. I did notice the the diablo’s hit a little lower but there a little heavier than some of the others I believe- still grouped well though. I haven’t even got the chance to test the beeman silver arrows yet. I know that generally pointed pellets aren’t as accurate as the domed shaped pellets.
Well, as you can see- full of questions! Seeking enlightenment! Compadres- please bestow your most valued knowledge upon me, so that I might approach the gates of airgun Nirvana!

O.K.- so I ran through some more test shooting again today and had some good results. I brought the PW down to exactly 6 and fired all the pellets I had at about 45 yards (paced out). Suprising results! No more spiralling, and all the pellets were within an inch center too center except for the crowmags which varied from 1/2 in to almost 2inches apart. The big suprise was when I started shooting the crosman premiers. They stayed within 1/2in of ea. other. This was shooting using my pack as a rest on the ground with 6 shots per session of testing. Then I went back to about 50 yards and still about the same results with the cp’s. Then I decided to move up to about 35yds and try shooting from the kneeling position. Fantastic results! I was in the bullseye for 5 out of 6 shots if I did my part! By the way, those beeman silver arrows did pretty good also from 35 yards . Kinda hard to hold the gun steady because it is so light but I was flabergasted at how tight my groups were in the kneeling position with the cp’s. No Joke! So I guess I’ll hang with the premiers for now although the jsb jumbos were right behind them. I then proceeded to stalk and hardly anything out today! I saw one squirrel, tried to take the shot and the pellet barely left the barrel!? Now I had it cocked and safety off for quite a while waiting to see something, maybe about 35-40 minutes and I’m wondering if that had anything to do with it? The squirrel got away and I then loaded another pellet and did a test fire to make sure everyting was O.K. and it was. Strange. Anyway, I then had a crow land about 55 yards away from me at the top of a pine tree. I took the shot, over compensated and watched the pellet sail right over his head!!! He pretty much gave me the finger and took off. Sonzabeotch!!! After 2.5 hours of running around in the woods I had enough! Man… what the hell!?
The time I noticed this the most was when my scope wasn’t directly vertically over the bore of my BAM B51 rifle. I swear it looked like the pellet was coming from under my right elbow and curving up and to the left before it hit the target.
Careful centering did the trick. After that, my shots were dead on side to side at any range. Just the vertical part of the POI shifted. Before, the windage would be slightly off each time I changed distance.
I’ve been shooting a Talon with a 18″ barrell for a month now. I noticed the same thing with the crow mags but only at low settings. I was also shootings some Kodiaks and JSB’s at the same time and didn’t notice this with them. Mine shoots the JSB’s jumbo heavy, 18 grs. better than the Kodiaks. I didn’t expect that because everyone talks about how the Kodiaks shoot in Air Force guns. On the other hand my Condor loves the Kodiaks.
I have seen the same thing tntshuffle..Not to worry as long as they hit where they are suppose to…..The further out you put the target the more you will be able to see which pellet groups the best….Those that are thwacking when you shoot them could be the most inaccurate because they are going super sonic and then slowing back to below the speed of sound where they are said to become unstable….You’ll just have to shoot till you’re blue in the face and make small changes to PW and fill pressures to see what works best…..If you can get a target out to about 60yds you should get some really good feedback….If you can find a pellet, pressure, PW setting that groups well at 60yds you can pretty much bet it will make one holers all day at 40yds….
Start shooting and keep notes…You’ll never remember all of the info and setting…..Have fun…..
maybe its because the crow mags are hollow points and only good out to like 30 yards before they lose accuracy. just a thought i have taken shots out to 50 yards with predator hollow points and still group very well, without any weird crap happening
Can’t really help as I’ve never shot anything but Kodiaks, but did want to acknowledge that I’ve seen similar to what your talking about with the pellet flight. I saw one through the scope just today that looked like a thrown curve ball that would have made a pro baseball pitcher jealous.
I swear on it’s path out, it curved out to the right to about the second mildot in the scope, but wound up hitting dead center of where I was intending it to hit…. Crazy stuff that I can’t explain….

tntshuffle, the low power shot is probably the result of your breech shifting away from the valve.
As a test cock you weapon, lock your breech and then try and move your breech away from the valve.
It only takes a tenth of a millimeter and your shot power will drop dramatically.
The hammer has to move your breech up the valve before it can open the valve, it will lose significant power, and therefore you valve will only open partly.
I find myself checking my breech is snug against the valve before every shot.
