Testing the .257

Nothing like a little early morning shooting test to make the day go well! ๐Ÿ˜€
.257 Cocked and Locked and ready to Rock! Woo-Hoo!!! The Dyotat100 .257! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-S–qPEfzQQk/UgirWnRxwfI/AAAAAAAABpU/f5YnRFDAPHM/s512/DSC01936.JPGAnd this part, you’ve already seen. But It’s early, and still playing with the dame Photophucket. ๐Ÿ‘ฟ

I couldn’t get a pic to load, but I had a very similar group with the NOE 80gr fp at 80 yards. Just a small clover leaf. I will be testing the NOE’s more today.

If I can get the fill nipple to quite leaking. ๐Ÿ™„

Charlie,

I have a few picatinny rails laying around. I think one has 25 moa built in it. Yeah, 10x mag is going to be hard but I don’t have to worry about it because I don’t have anywhere to shoot 600 yards for now, but I will find some space when I feel I am ready to give it a go.

Joe,

That scope has 140 minutes of elevation? Which is what you would need with 835 inches of drop. Remember you have to be on at 100 yards and bottomed out down adjustments to do that.

But still that is impressive.

I have mine bottomed out at 200 yards with shims and I have 107 MOA of elevation, with the NOE bullets I am out of elevation at 640 to 650 and have 150 inches or so on the 24 MOA reticle. Problem with doing that is I am eating my muzzle break and thee rubber bulb in my field of view.

I have always felt that most air gunners use way too much magnification due to their, shall we say in my opinion… inexperience? But I have to admit, that at 14 power that can is covered by the Hollands reticle, the dots cover the can and then some, so I try to sight with the slashes that are between the dots.

It is the only time I felt I needed more power in my scope.

RC

Well Hell. I was feeliing pretty good about the 930’s I was getting and now here you go with this 1100 stuff and I’m feeling all back of the bus and shit! AGAIN!!! ๐Ÿ˜†

Yeah, I know. I did go with a 21″ bbl. ๐Ÿ˜ณ But it was all that would fit my LDC. (Now who ever heard of anyone building a gun to fit the damed LDC?) ๐Ÿ˜ณ Buuuuuut, Doug did say he didn’t want to build them anymore. Grrrrrrrr!!!

Now with all that pity party cry’n, let me say, MAN THIS THING SHOOTS!!! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

It is going to be interesting to see what the lighter OldGoat creations do. If they still are Super Accurate, We, (I) ๐Ÿ˜€ will have a winner for sure! ๐Ÿ˜€

I also am not to the 5 in 1/2″ yet. But, have shot quite a few groups well under 1/2″ at 80 and 85 yards. Many just over 1/4″, so it is very do-able. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I need to extend the range a bit. Without getting into trouble! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

OG,

That really sucks. I thought the boss would have been much easier to do.

These are bullets and they need to be pushed. At least 900 fps since I for one have had excellent results there in the beginning. Im sure that somewhere out there, the boss could at least push the Lymans at 900 or about 880 or so. I don’t know, I don’t have one here to tinker with. But can the REG be removed in that gun. When I think power I don’t think Regulator. When I think regulator I think little to medium power and more than anything CONSISTENCY. Just not sure about the boss and wolverine and others anymore. I don’t know how much “GUTS” they have to push BULLETS at high speeds. The thing to is this, once you achieve 900 fps, you more than likely will want 1000 fps. Trust me, I know cause that’s exactly what happened to me. Pushing out to 200 yards and beyond on small targets like eggs and soda cans require some speed. And because we are shooting bullets, they perform much better than diablos in every way at those speeds. The 257 will perform at 900 fps but damnit man, 1000 to 1050 fps and UP is soooooooo much nicer. Hell, even though i’m very satisfied with my 1010 fps with the lymans, I find myself sort jealous of RC and RJ’s and Dougs 1070 fps and 1100 fps guns…. ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

So a good platform would be ANY DAQ, or HALEY, or Condor, or even a Daystate Ranger. My buddy modded a Ranger that shot 52 gr bullets at waaay over 1000 fps. But he was also filling to 4000 plus.

Hell, I would completely build me a haley or daq or qb based gun to my own specs if I had the equipment or at least a machinist that had the time to do the work for me.

I see I am quickly getting the reputation of the man who’s airguns collect the most dust ๐Ÿ˜ก I can’t deny it. How many of you shriveled up peckers have a half dozen maniacs running around, on, under, and over you 24-7 ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Anywaaaaaaaaaaay, my address is on its way OG. I appreciate it and I promise to have a report within seven days upon receiving them! The good thing about those lighter lyman’s you dropped is that since I have three shims for my .257 valve I should be able to play around and get them at the best speed they perform at all the way up near supersonic. I’m no expert on center of gravity in relation to twist rates, etc but I doubt they are “too short” (layman’s terms, lol).

,257 but if you have some .258 as well, sure! I also want to try out some round ball. I have to see if I can find some. I remember how my dragon slayer would stack round ball in the same hole at 30 yards! You never know.

Congrats on that future .30 EG! Man that should be one amazing BP! Sorry to hear about your less than satisfying trials with the FX. And as for the .5 moa @ 100…I also have not swam in those waters yet ๐Ÿ™

According to handloads.com and assuming I entered everything correctly, if I were to take the “pepsi challenge” at 600 yards my rifle pushing 74 gr lymans @ 1030fps my scope would need 44 mils of elevation. I have 40 mils internal plus 11 in my reticle, however, it is only a fixed 10x mag and @ 600 that pepsi can at ten time mag would look like a (insert insect of choice here). HOWEVER, if such a shot could be made I would ask Charlie to send the crown my way since my bullet had to drop nearly 1000 inches to get there ๐Ÿ˜ฏ And I would still have 56 fpe once there and with a 100 yard zero any small critters would be toast in a 1/3 mile hunting zone! Well, in theory at least ๐Ÿ˜€

Ol goat you must relax once you retire and spend more time on the computer. Or 2nd choice shootin!!

Hey Joe: I ainโ€™t gonna sell you shit!

I WOULD send you a โ€œcare packageโ€; IF I had your address! What do you want the bullets sized to: .258″, or .257″. I guess that it would be better for me to send you some of each. When I send them; just don’t take a year to try them out! ๐Ÿ˜†

I think that I might have Mikeโ€™s address around here somewhere! ๐Ÿ˜†

I WILL find the time to see how the 30 to 1 and pure lead bullet shoot at 100 yards this week.

I read Dougโ€™s topic about the LBT 70 grain .251 mold that he is going to have Veral make for him, I thought that the bullet looked good and I was already figuring out how much I could mill off of the mold to get the bullet down into the 50 grain area.

I also agree with Doug when he said that it is very hard to get Veral to make something that at least somewhat corresponds to the specs that you send!

I ordered 4 different bullet weight and shapes .258โ€ 4 cavity, low drag for air gun molds from Veral. I sent drawings that were similar to what Doug shows in his post. None of them ended up like what I ordered, 2 of them dropped bullets at .253โ€ and were spire points instead of the LBT flat nose. I sent the 2 undersized molds back to have the driving bandโ€™s OD enlarged. When I got them back, the driving bands were not only enlarged but also widened to at least twice the length.

I called Veral up and asked WTF? He asked me to try the bullets out and, if they donโ€™t work out, I can send them back for a refund or replacement. The molds have to be in new/slightly used shape for a refund. When I finally got to the range, I was having issues with the Boss and I didnโ€™t have a chance to give the 4 different LBT bullets a fair trial. The initial results were dismal; to say the least! Very low speeds due to way too much bore friction and 3โ€ groups at 50 yards out of a Hart barrel.

For the last 2 months, I havenโ€™t been able to even shoot an air gun. Just too damn busy. I got the Lyman and NOE molds in late last week, reworked them last Sat night and I have been playing with them some. The bullets look good and I thought that I needed to send my LBT stuff back for a refund or replacement. I pulled the 4 LBT molds out of the zip lock bag and, all 4 of them have a slight dusting of rust on the sprue plates! I donโ€™t know if I can get a return on them; I will try.

If the Lymans and NOE donโ€™t work out in my Boss/.257โ€ Hart barrel project and they work in your guns, I might have to make somebody a deal, sell the Boss and just go back to shooting my R3 25 long Matador with a BSA barrel. I know that it shoots really well; I was hoping to come up with something even better.

For the last 3 years, I have spent well over $4000 on a personal quest just to get an airgun that will give consistent ยฝโ€, 5 shot 100 yards groups. Is that so hard?

I forgot that the above mentioned airgun has to be self contained and give AT LEAST 25-30 shots per fill. I am beginning to think that the Boss will never be able to do what I want it to do. The Boss is maxed out at 880 fps with a 46.5 grain pellet and, after mods, it still is 880 fps. I have tried a LOT of mods including replacing the reg with an Altros regulator. NADA.

Ed says that his 30 cal R3 Matador long version will give 30-35 regulated shots with a 46.5 grain JSB pellet at 980 fps. He has said that it is going to be a game changer and that the European air gun makers are going to have to sit up and take notice. He is only going to make 30 in the initial batch, just to see what people think of them, test the market and get feedback.

I know that there is at least one of them coming to the US: it has my name on it. ๐Ÿ˜€

Ed has told me that my R3 25 cal breech will bolt onto the 30 cal without modifications but; he would rather have me test it out as a 30 cal. I will comply and shoot a few tins of 30 cal pellets thru it before it becomes a .257โ€. This will be my 6th Edgun and: I really hate waiting for Edguns! ๐Ÿ˜ฅ

Man, this gotten to be a long post! I am currently pretending that I am on 2nd shift, I just got off of work, I am getting drunk and posting on the TAG. WGAF that I still have to go to bed, get up in 4 hours and go to work!

Ahh; I still remember the good life.

Oldgoat,

Please, if you can, sell me a sample pack too. I sure would love to try those lighter bullets in my long barrel. Especially the NOE!

My barrel slugged at .25685-.25690! If you can swing it…let me know how much and where to send. Thanks.

Joe

Woo-Hoo! Those lighter bullets should get my short barreled .257 smok”n! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

Can’t wait to see how they do. I wonder how much it effects the BC. I’d bet they will do just fine inside of 300 yards. :8:

Hi Mike.

I got 2, Lyman 257420 molds and a NOE 80 grain .257 mold in the last couple of days.

I wasnโ€™t interested in shooting a 75 grain 257420 or a 80 grain NOE bullet so; I took the molds to work and milled 0.110โ€ off of the base of the 257420 and 0.135โ€™ off of the NOE.

The Lyman is on the left, the NOE is on the right.

These 2 bullets were the second attempt at casting with the new molds. On the first try, I didnโ€™t have a lighter to smoke the molds but, the 30 to 1 lead was hot and I didnโ€™t want to run to the store for a lighter. The Lyman molds now drop bullets that weigh 56.5 grains and the NOE mold drops at 65.3 grains. A 56 grain bullet just might work out fine in my modified Boss. The NOE might still be a little heavy. I cast an ass load of bullets today and then drained the pot. I want to cast a ton of pure lead bullets and then send at least one of the Lymans and the NOE out to have them made into hollow points.

Using 30 to 1 lead, the NOE drops at .261โ€, the Lyman is .259โ€. My Lee .258โ€ sizing die sizes the slugs down to .2578โ€, my Hart barrel slugs at .2575โ€.

When I get the 30 to 1 and the pure lead bullets sized and weight sorted, I will send you a โ€œcare packageโ€.

You been talk’n to my wife? ๐Ÿ˜ณ Butter is always good for a little outdoor fun! ๐Ÿ˜ˆ ๐Ÿ˜†

Nice shooting Mike!

P.S. I heard that you like to lube up with butter! ๐Ÿ˜†
