Testing the latest R&L Valve

I’ve been looking forward to testing out the R&L offering for sometime now.

So OK Guy’s, The test numbers are “IN!!!”

R&L has continued to improve their valve system. Randy sent me three different valve bodies, and the newest version of their valve stem. It is well machined and fairly conservative on air.

Here are the numbers in both my carbon fiber tank AND the standard AF tank, and shooting through a 7mm, or 27 5/8″ Barrel by TJ’s. Also set up by R&L.

This is a Semi custom R&L offering. The bushing supplied with the barrel are well fitted, and the finish and machine work of the barrel it’s self is exceptionally well done. The Barrel is nicely crowned, however, the end user needs to set the lede for his chosen himself.

The front bushing on this particular barrel is set up for its matched Shroud, in that the front bushing is threaded to match the base of the LDC. Between the threaded rear of the bushing/LDC, and the well thought out combo Muzzle alignment to shroud/ air stripper, very small Dia. passages are possible.

This really helps as small passages can often lead to clipping. This has been well taken care of. I was afraid at first the shroud was set up for .22 but a quick call to Randy at R&L confirmed that it was indeed a .257 Shroud. and NO It Didn’t Clip!!! I’m Stoked!

As many of you know, I cast my own bullets from a custom NOE mold that throws them out at 60 grains. This is a 20-1 lead tin mix, and is Very-Very accurate!!! Think 1/4″ out of a good barrel accurate 0n my 80 yard Home Range.

AF tank @ 3000 psi.

973 fps @ 126 fpe This is a HUGE performance increase above the Stock AF Condor valve, which was tested first. It ran a little over 800 fpe. In fact at 3200 it ran 830 for a fpe of 91.8.
That’s a 34 fpe increase from the valve alone folks! (Even at 3500 psi, the AF stock valve could only reach 850 fps).

Now for the good stuff!!!

In the CF bottle, set at 3700, the factory valve hit only 850 for a fpe of 96.28. It would seem that the AF valve had pretty much reached it’s limit of flow capacity.

This is with the supplied valve body and newest stem.

3000 psi in a factory bottle with 3000 psi, 973 fps for a fpe of 126. Not bad at all!

Now put this same valve in the cf bottle, and fill to 3700 psi, and it still responds.
It put the 60 gr. NOE Flat Point down range at 1037 fps for a total of 143.31 fpe.

I would say that this is a very respectable improvement over the factory offering. In fact, a Woo-Hoo Improvement!!! LOL!!!
What’s more, it is immediately available with a simple phone cal, visit to R&L’s web site, l or e-mail.

There something else coming along, that is even more exciting! Wish I could tell you all about it. But it is going to change bullet shooting quest for ALL involved.
Perhaps one of the players will chime in once every thing is finalized.

Oop’s! Did I hear someone ask, Yeah, that’s all great, but how did it shoot. could you hit the broad side of a barn with it? Well, yes you can. In fact, you can hit the screw heads holding the Barn Doors on their hinges.

First shots were two at a time, 80 yards, at 1″ circles. First two shots formed a overlapping horizontal 8. Moved on to the next target, same-same. Next same-same. Three targets, three locking horizontal 8’s. Not only that, they were all in exactly the same place on the targets! Extreme spread of group? How about well under .295″ Yep, under 1/4″ at 80 yards. I got cocky and shot a 10 shot group. Of course there was the always present flyer. And one only. You guessed it. It was the last shot! Grrrrr!!! Group size, still under 3/8″. Add in the flier, and it increased to just under 1/2″. I’ll Take It!

No wonder they don’t want Tofazfou shooting at the Extreme Bench rest!!!LOL Yeah-Yeah, I know-I know, it’s the safety thing. But Still—–The way these .257’s shoot—–I wouldn’t want to try an beat them!

I got it at Air Tanks Plus, and they are in Sacramento CA….There were 2 left and i got one and now out of stock…Only 3625 psi, but still better than 3000 psi…..Test Pressure is marked on bottle of 350 Bar and that is 5400 psi + so I would have no problem putting 4000 psi in it….But the best accuracy i believe will be much lower in psi??? http://www.airtanksplus.com/products/hpa-bottles/evanix-480cc-carbon-fiber-hpa-bottle rifle50

Where did you find your cf tank?

I put in an email to get included on any second order of them from here, but haven’t heard anything.

Knife………….DO you know when the new VALVE and STEM will be available?? I just got a .257 from R&L 3 weeks ago with his THEN EXTREME VALVE and the stem that came is modded like the port .192″ long?? Have 95 gram brass hammer and he said 10# spring….In your opinion what NOW do i need with the NEXT NEW VALVE? Dyotat suggested around 115 gr hammer but NOT SURE lb of spring…….plus the NEWEST VALVE i will need…..Just got a CF bottle so covered there…………Thanks……I guess i can call RANDY………rifle50

It will no doubt all be available when they hit the market.

Thank you Doug!! :8:

The new valves they are building use stock breech. They are a drop in for condor with heavier spring and should run a 105-115 gram hammer to work right.

It will no doubt all be available when they hit the market.

And When the new Larger Valve stem and Valve Body come out, they will indeed require a larger ID Breach.

As far as I know, the I.D. of the breech has orings and such in there- not just a “mod it yourself” kind of deal- unless of course you have a lathe! I was just wondering if R&L will offer a new breech for sale, or offer the service of modifying a factory breech, or leaving it up to the customer to be done.

The new valve from R&L will use stock breech. They are making the .25 valve which works on there .257 barrels.

Nice!! Thanks for the update Knife! I think though, you meant 70.6 grain 257420 HP bullets?? So when the new higher-flow valve comes out, that needs the modded breech, is R&L planning on modifying or selling modified breeches to customers?

I lightly ported the R&L valve stem, and it reached 989 fps with the 7.06 grain Lyman 257420 bullet HP’d By Eric at Hollow Point Mold Service. This was at 3700 psi. So the R&L valve can respond to higher fill pressures in the CF bottle.

The R&L Valve Stems are now being shipped with the slight modifications I did in the porting.

And When the new Larger Valve stem and Valve Body come out, they will indeed require a larger ID Breach.

Here are the numbers this week on the mod’ed valve stem that I did with the R&L valve stem.

Lyman 70.6 HP————-989 Fps——-153.57 fpe
NOE 67.6 Flat point——-999.9———-150.11
Noe 59.6 Flat Point——1036————142.08
Lyman Mod’ed to 54.6—-1060————130.16

The new valve soon to be released, will give apx. 70-8- more fps :8:

For comparison here are what I got in January with my TT .25 condor:
FPS 6&7 Rings
6 RINGS 3000 PSI avg. 61.5 gn
917, 925, 917, 923, 922
3200 PSI
941, 941, 938, err, err
944, 946,

7 RINGS 3000 PSI avg. 73.0 gn
875, 869, 871, 871, 876.
3200 PSI
884, 895, 894, err, err.

H&N 31.2 gn
985

I don’t know diddly about working on these. I just got my 257 with the extreme valve in last month. It has the stock hammer and spring. I did some shooting 72 grain slugs at 3000 psi and 3200 psi.

I got the same results out of both psi strings, 860 fps topped out. It didn’t matter if I had the power wheel on 12 or 8. I assumed the valve was maxed out, but now I see that may not be the case? Maybe 200psi difference is not enough to see? I would sure love to find a 4500 psi tank for this, but then I would have to figure out some way to deal with the 3000psi gauge on this valve.

So the new valve w/the larger valve stem would have a new breech?

Current extreme valve is same out side dia. as factory, so no new breach needed. Buuuuuut! There there is a larger valve stem on the way! 😉

Yes, they are one piece stems.

Does RL also have a new breech to go along with (I assume) the larger tophat? I looked at their page, and I didn’t see anything about a new breech. Or is the tophat the same size? Is it still like a factory tophat, or is it a 1pc tophat?
