Q:

Texan Losing its spine

I wonder if anyone can help with this…

My Texan has suddenly started to behave rather poorly. The velocity adjustment barrel used to be snug and somewhat tricky to turn, now it is so loose that it spins like an acme screw and wobbles constantly. I haven’t touched the thing (wheel) in over a year, when I got it dialed in perfectly and just the other day I took a shot and it pretty much spat the pellet out at such a low speed that I could have thrown it by hand at a higher speed. I checked and the wheel hadn’t moved from its position, but that’s when I noticed how wobbly it was. Today I chronied it, and yes it was flinging 280gn pellets at a measly 400fps, rather than the 900 fps I have been getting for over a year.

Turning the wheel all the way in to its stopping point got me close to its original speed but at the cost of air. I usually get 6-8 shots before it falls under 800fps, now I get a whole three…

I noticed also that the hammer spring is just bouncing around in there, literally sliding back and forth and clanging when I walk, which I never noticed before. When the wheel is turned all the way in, it only just touches the spring enough to stop it from bouncing around, but as I said I don’t remember ever hearing the spring or feeling it slide around.

Breaking down the gun, I expected to find a completely fatigued spring, but it seems fine. The velocity wheels threads appear fine as well, it just doesn’t fit snugly anymore for some reason. And it makes no sense that only the last two ticks on the adjuster are usable now, anything beyond that and nothing gets past a few hundred fps. When I first toyed with the wheel over a year ago I remember that 400fps drop off was at the first and second tick marks, depending on weight.

It hasn’t been sitting around unused either, I’ve literally used this thing at least five days a week since I purchased it. This sudden performance issue just came right out of nowhere.

Any ideas? Does anyone reputable make spare parts or do tune ups out there? I’m guessing something is just worn out, but I couldn’t see anything that looked odd when it was apart. I gave everything a good cleaning and relubing before reassembling, and while it seems a hair better its still miles away from being what it was only a week ago.

Sorry for the late reply, but anyways the new stock spring is around 88-90mm long.
So yours is definetly dead. You should contact af on that matter. See what they say about it.

Do you happen to know what the size/weight the spring is meant to be? I believe it was 70mm when I pulled it, but if it isn’t meant to be bouncing around in there then its short either way and I might as well McMaster a new one

From the sound of your description I would be pretty sure to say that the stock spring has collapsed.
Measure the spring how long it is.
