Q:

Texan Shrouds are here!

Super quiet!

We got them from Randy. He hasn’t got them on the site yet but he has a bunch in stock.

If anyone sells shrouds and ships to Canada let me know 🙂

All right here is some actual data on the sound reduction.

Indoors (echo ridden basement) dry-fire db meter five feet behind rifle with 36db background noise(not sure if it matters, but I wrote it down):
113.7db (no shroud)
96.5db (shrouded)

for comparison, .22 mrod
95db (shrouded)

Outdoors live fire (310gn pellets @ 850fps) 57db background noise from rush hour traffic
Texan measured from 10 feet to the left of rifle:
93.5db (shrouded)
Texan measured from 1 foot behind rifle:
103.6 (shrouded)

For comparison
Mrod .22 (34gn pellets @ 900fps)
76.4db at ten feet to left of rifle
95db at one foot behind rifle

and lastly for comparison:
Siberian husky howling ten feet away:
80db
Siberian husky squeaky toy getting ravaged and squeeking at ten feet away:
72db

Unfortunately I’m not going to be testing the Texan unshrouded outdoors, but hopefully theres enough data here to get an idea of the suppressors efficiency. I also included pellet weight and speed because this is a variable that changes the volume more than you would expect. I’m actually surprised by the results here, I expected much higher numbers from the Texan, but everythings always so much louder when you’re pulling the trigger.

I found this review here:
http://www.airgunnation.com/topic/airforce-texan-wrl-shroud-review/

According to the reviewer, the shroud brings the volume down to somewhere around 90db, which is about 20db higher than his mrod.

But I’m pretty sure my mrod is way quieter than that, and my Texan is far louder than 90db. I’ll need to get a dbmeter to test for sure, and I absolutely will post my results here as soon as it arrives.

Any hard data on noise reduction?

I ended up getting a Texan with an RL shroud. I don’t have any way to measure the sound but I can say the shroud does bring the volume down quite a bit. The main thing is that it doesn’t sound like a gun at all with the shroud on. There is a rather loud metallic clank as the pellet passes through the baffles, I’m guessing that a well placed o-ring, spring or some sort of rubber coating on the shroud would take care of it. It sounds much louder from a shooter standpoint than it does from a few feet away, though once again the main sound is that metallic clanking, almost like a hammer slapping against a sheet of steel.

Its probably still not backyard friendly, but my neighbors aren’t bothered by it. I did have to upgrade my duct seal backstop with lead sheets and Kevlar to actually stop the pellets quietly though. Anything less than that and there’s the earsplitting sound of splintering wood followed by the equally obnoxious sound of shattering concrete from the blocks buried in the hill behind the backstop. Having said that, I wouldn’t be shooting it if there were houses directly behind mine, fortunately there’s just a field.

I do think that if you could get rid of the clanking baffles sound it would be as quiet as a springer.

Any hard data on noise reduction?
