The EdGun’s First FT Match…

The official national field target season is over, so I went and shot my first official field target match with the EdGun (R3 Matador Standard in 177) today.

Didn’t get a chance to go thru all my scope dope numbers on Saturday (indoor range had no power) so I pretty much winged it. I set up range cards in ChairGun to get my distance clicks and then check them since CG isn’t always spot on. The Ed shoots surprising flat between 23 and 34 yards compared to my other FT rifle. I knew when my 10 yard click number was off by eight clicks (1/4″ per click) it was going to be an interesting day. :banghead:

Managed to get a 43 out of 48 and tied for first place. Not the best score but also not bad considering it’s all new equipment and i’m still ironing out a few of the quirks. The rifle is so short it’s a very different experience over a typical sized rifle so to mitigate this I added a stabilizer weight to the front to calm things down. I’d say half of the five shots I missed were due to too much muzzle movement, one of the shots was a painfully small killzone (sub 1/2″ at 34 yards).

There were two targets that were forced offhand standing. Got all four shots without a jacket or a sling. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

The Sightron 10-50x MOA-2 scope was awesome and mates well with the EdGun, had a custom wheel made to keep the package compact. Will be doing some indoor testing next Saturday to sort things out for the last few remaining matches this year. Then when the season shuts down for the winter i’ll go in and turn down the reg a tad so I can get it down past 880fps without the velocity jumps I encountered in previous testing.

Once I get everything on the EdGun sorted i’ll start putting the Cricket through the same process.

Is the government of New Zealand sponsoring a courtesy charter jet to fly us all down there from the US kind of out of the question? ๐Ÿ™‚ That is the top of my bucket list for gorgeous places to visit.

quote Wingman NZ:

Well done Jim.. so Im guessing you got that custom scope rail sorted?
Any plans to come to the world F/T champs in here New Zealand late 2014?

Using the stock rail… Have to make another one, I messed up the first one (set the drop backwards, it was upside down in the vice). I also made the dovetail a bit too wide, figured if I got it 100% right the first time it would basically be luck. Have done a few move dovetail projects since and i’ll have no problem nailing it next time.

This Sightron scope has 50MOA of vertical travel, the Nikko only had 36MOA so the new rail is still needed to get the “swapability” that I want with all of my equipment. So the new scope works and the old one still doesn’t. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Probably won’t make it out to NZ for the Worlds, unfortunately, shame because I hear it’s super beautiful down there. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Congrats on first place Jim!

If we were missing one chromosome we would all be woman. ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜†

I knew in college that airguns and airplanes were important to me to take a little additional time to get an MBA for more income and it worked. ๐Ÿ˜€ Is that funny? My goals in life are shooting, hunting, and flying and not much of anything else (ok kids too but that is designed in the genes and out of my control so give me a break. :-)) When I die I want the epitaph to say this guy had a hell of a good time.

quote Sir Ville:

That scope looks magnificent! Iยดm starting to think my wife is right regarding one thing: Weยดre all crazy ! Buying such scopes to air-rifles sure makes people around wonder if one is missing a chromosome. If someone had told me some while ago that iยดll buy several 1600 – 1700 Euro airguns in a near future – and expensive scopes for each one – iยดd have laughed at that poor bastard. Maybe i do need a head doctor after all … ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Show us some pictures, I’m debating to start shooting FT with my Matador as well ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Dear Syn;

Congrats;

We are really happy and hope all the best for you.

Please do some more practice and get better result.

We are proud of you….

Congratulations!
It is good to see a Matador on top! ๐Ÿ™‚
I know it takes a lot of time to adjust everything to ones preferences.
I am curious how the Cricket preforms compared to the Matador.

Regards, Robert.

You have a picture locked on target? Stabilizing that gun looks a quite a trick.

I doubt they care much. I repeatedly stomp them with my USFT, so they are probably relieved to see me with something new. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ˜€ Just kidding, we have some really competitive shooters at our club and for some reason today the high score in pcp open was relatively low. The top score for today was 47 out of 48 in the pcp WFTF division (which is a typical first place score for open pcp). I had a good score for the first time out on a new rifle but it wasn’t anything that would contend in the scope FT nationally or even locally. It was a lazy day at the match, just last weekend was the Nationals and i’m still recovering from the 67 hours of driving to Texas and back…

I’m certainly not the first to use a BP in FT regardless of what that post says. The father/son team who shoot for Crosman shoot modified BP’s and shoot them VERY well. Ray came in a close 2nd to Harold Rushton at the Nationals in the WFTF division. There have probably been others too. Might be the first time FT in the USA has seen an EdGun actually in a match (I brought it to the Nationals sight in day (and as a back up if my match rifle started acting up) and brought the Cricket to the Western Regional Championships for sight in and post match plinking).

The main comment of the day today was how quiet the EdGun was and a number of people kept thinking it was the Cricket. To me it’s LOUD with my ear on the action, the sound of the pellet is quite a bit louder than the rifle itself. I missed one today (hit the faceplate) and it sounded like it was a 22. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I have brought both to a few matches for fun and now everyone is confused as to which is what, “the black one is the Cricket”. ๐Ÿ˜‰

DonnyFL just pointed out your picture on the YF. What was the reaction of the other shooters to being stiffed by a little Edgun?

I thought you had to turn the mag down to get that focus. The stock Zeiss scopes are the same deal w/o a manuf. mod.

quote synopsys:

That scope is FANTASTIC!!! Super clear, the clicks have excellent feel. The one thing I have yet to successfully accomplish is getting the lens turned down so I can focus to 10 yards at 50x. Right now I have to zoom out to about 20x to range under 11 yards. Works as is though.

I’ll probably leave it so if I want to use it for long range PB stuff I don’t have to mess with it again. Has the longest eye relief of any scope I have used, good for high power, kicks like a mule rifles.

Congratulations :8: :8:

If I didn’t want to buy so damn many other things I would have picked up that scope too. ๐Ÿ˜ณ
