Q:

The Utility of aftermarket parts

Ok Fellas, so I am certainly interested in modifying and tuning my rifle, and it has only shipped today. As I want to avoid too much attention, the only mod I’ve ordered so far is a shorty shroud from R&L. Now I have read about a trigger slap mod and a quick release tophat. I am purely interested in pest control and taking small game including grouse, rabbit and squirrel or marmot. Would it serve my utility much to obtain the tophat? I am perked up a bit in that talontunes advertises the OEM tophat as having a tendency to wiggle loose from its seat. Thoughts on this? Do I need it? Particularly if I am using this rifle daily?

The Hammer slap mod doesn’t interest me as much but is there anything else it does besides reduce hammer noise? Beyond that, I AM interested in milking the most FPE out of this gun as possible, but my philosophy of use dictates (for the talonP, UNTIL I sink on a condor) as compact a rifle as possible, until I dedicate to a weapon solely designed for as much power as possible, (an escape?) so I would look at getting an 18″ .25 barrel. So, any thoughts there? Thanks guys.

Good points on your power setting. And on artillery hold. I feel you there. Personally I do my best to keep the most pressure in the area on my hand cradling a trigger housing, in the web of my thumb and my hand slightly under to hold the rifle up…I’ve shot for years and until I started shooting pellets a lot last year I never learned to do this, but I had noticed the lighter I held my gun the better my pellets hit, this is the first place Ive heard of the artillery hold but thought I’d comment on that. Kind of cool to need to hold it a different way, when it’s pellets instead of bullets…

Oh Yeah!!!!
Forgot to mention! THIS is THE place to be!! :rofl:

Dan;
I personally believe that the factory top hat is a “weak link”! That’s why I swear by my Talon Tunes one piece unit.
As far as frame flex and poi change, you are correct. I run the factory pistol grip and fore grip on my gun and have not had problems with poi change as long as I hold the gun correctly. You need to really get the feel of your gun and be aware of your hold on every shot. An artillery hold is the best.
One of the things I learned early on about these guns is that they like for the shooter to be consistent before the gun will be consistent. Hole the gun the same way every time. Lock the breech to the same side every time, etc.
As far as the power wheel goes, I never touch mine. It doesn’t even have numbers on it anymore. It’s set somewhere around #4 and it stays there.
I mainly shoot JSB’s (.25 caliber) but I can run 70+gr slugs through it without changing any settings.

So the tophat, I presume it will increase FPS (and FPE) by a few knocks due to allowing more air through the valve as it is the final stage before barrel correct? Is the tophat (as I am seeming to get the feeling) THE weakest link in the Airforce gun design…aside from an aluminum frame which can change POI due to flex?

Any other thoughts guys? Also, is the yellow forum more active than this one? Is that the place to be?

Hi Dan;
Besides the shroud to “quiet the bark”, one of the best investments you could make is to pick up that one piece quick change top hat from Tony at Talon Tunes. Besides curing the loose top hat blues, it also offers you tha ability to tune your gun that much further.
A few things you are going to want to do as soon as your gun arrives are to clean all of the assembly crap out of the bore. Next, and just as important, is to familiarize yourself with how to disassemble and reassemble your gun.
If you plan on doing any tuning or modifications, you WILL need a chronograph.
Also, have an assortment of pellets to try. JSB’s seem to be the all time favorite.
Wildfire! :5:
