Thinking about a Talon SS
I would like to buy an Air Force air rifle to use as a training rifle for my AR and also for general plinking purposes. I have an indoor range in my basement that is 30 yards (20′ x 150′- concrete). I would like to add my Aimpoint Optics from the AR to the Air Force rifle and shoot a lot more in my basement range. I received some great info on the Condor but now I would like any advice from the Talon SS owners.
Is anyone out there using a TSS as an “AR Trainer?” I know the TSS is not silent but could you shoot it in a basement range without hearing protection? Any thoughts on the caliber that works best for the TSS? I have read good things about the .25 cal. This rifle would mostly be used within 50 yards. I may use it occasionally for small game and pests so the .25 cal might be a good option. The cost difference between the operating a .177 and .25 are not a big deal to me since these rounds will be much less expensive than 7.62mm rounds for my M14 or even the .223 rounds for the AR.

Ill agree iv just pit my 12″ .22 back on and its hand clap quite but I will say I made a shroud to help my 24″ barrle. So that helps to. And a stock ss is not to lo iy d if u keep the psi down and the hammer spring. Just my 2 cents.
Yep the SS is noisy without a added shroud. quieter than a condor without a shroud of course , but with a added shroud, just about silent.
I think a SS in 177 would be a cool plinker, but if you are thinking of pesting at all get the .22, even with the gun turned down and using 14 grain pellets you have a lot more energy on target . 🙂
any way you go you will love the air force .
Let’s not forget there are a number of forum members who can make that SS so quiet you can shoot it in bed next to your wife, girlfriend, or dog…and not wake them up.
Start at TalonTunes for top quality/top dollar
and check out GTBJ, and Silent Hunter (Fishing Rod?)
for less expensive models, but still effective beyond
any reasonable use.

Thanks for your input. I think he .177 Talon SS will work for my purposes. I like having the option of adding a longer, larger barrel at some point in the future.

I too have the SS in 22 cal, and I have a 177 barrel too. As far as sound in a basement, it may be a little loud, but I don’t think it would be uncomfortable. If you installed a longer barrel which would require removing the end cap it would be roughly the same as shooting a 22LR in regard to noise. Mine will shoot 1/2″ and even better groups at 25 yards in 22 cal. Those were with unsorted Crosman hollow points.With the H&N Baracuda Match the groups get even better if I do my part. As far as small game/pests, I have been able to take down VA grey squirrels out to 45 yards with just mil dot hold over (25 yard zero) every one so far with one shot. I know this doesn’t answer your question on a trainer, but from owning one of these guns, and several other guns I have grown to enjoy shooting the SS more and more. Also, mine is mostly shock, with the exception of a little added scotch-brite and a spacer in the shrouded part of the frame.

A TSS has a 12″ barrel, limiting your velocity a little. The heavier 22 and 25 pellets will take longer to reach your target. If you’re planning to hit man sized targets then the drop shouldn’t be much of an issue.
I own a 12″ TSS 177 and shoot the 10.6gn Kodiak Match pellets, without hand sorting, at 40 yards and reliably hit a 2″ soda can. At 50 yards there’s a little bit of drop to compensate. After 40 shots some POI shift. At 20-30 yards you’re likely good to 50-60 shots before POI shift.

I too have the TSS in .177, with std. 12″ barrel….I drilled the front barrel spacer and frame to help get the DB level down a bit more…I also fabricated a 5″ LDC that fits internally between barrel muzzle and end cap….my gun is SO QUIET…you could shoot it anywhere and not have to worry about being heard..I can shoot it from under my enclosed back porch…sounds like my Shih Tzu sneezing 😀 😀 😀
The .177 pellet still has sufficient FPE for squirrels and such out to 50 yards…but nice thing about the AF guns is just how easy /cheap it is to change calibers 😎 😎
