To lube or Not to lube?
Wind was zero this morning so I decided to do the lubed and unlubed
pellet test with JSB 18.1gr @ 65yds….
I shot about 50 unlubed pellets, refilled, and then a few 5 shot groups.
I did the same with lubed pellets only the wind started to pickup ever so
slight from left to right, while I was in the middle of the lubed pellet test
so, the conditions for each test were different… I think it is still
questionable as to which is better….
I know this target is a mess so you will have to trust me that the other
holes are not part of the 5 shot groups… You can pretty much tell that
they are old and have closed up some from the rain and moisture…

I think it is really safe to say that the difference between lubed and
unlubed has less effect on accuracy than my ability to shoot accurate…. I
had the front of the gun clamped in my gun rest but it would be ideal to
use a gun vise…Would be interesting to see someone else do the
comparison though 80 GRIT…

I found something interesting about grumpy…. I saw some of his
posts on another forum and it seems we have a closet nice guy in our
mits…. He was using words like wonderful, beautiful. Phrases like “that
sounds great”, “I would love to get that”, “Thank you so much”, I was
floored to hear such pleasentries from the master of grump…. And then
there was some discussion about curling but I won’t go into that… Must
be a Canada thing….. 😀
Maybe they finally got his medication right! 😆
I never lube pellets with any of my rifles, nor do I clean my barrels. I have top notch accuracy from them all. I have always been interested in testing “lubed -vs-unlubed”…good post, perhaps you can try again under better conditions…I will try a test soon as well.

Thanks guys… I think I am going to stop lubing for a while and see what
happens… I have never shot unlubed pellets for any length of time…..
Great groups Mam either way I know I have done this and will probably do it agian from time to time just to see in pcp’s I guess I can truly say I have had some better groups with lubed pellets but then I might have done my part better so still not sure but always glad to see your post especially at 65 yds to me that is the only way to really tell what your gun is doing great post keep them coming!
I’ve been using Menzerna SIP and Nano polished then a final coat of turtlewax chrome polished on mine haha!!! But only on a new barrel.
mamcrackin: Thanks for the post. I enjoy reading and all the good information. Some clean their barrels and some don’t ? I guess it’s an accuracy thing. When nothing else works, clean the barrel.
I read the same thing on a rimfire blog. Never clean the barrel, only as a last ditch effort!

You have to get all of the oil off of pellets. Any oil floating on the surface of the pellet will mess with the barrel.
Clean the barrel and use paper towels to suck up excess oil on the pellets.
It’s the oil in the pores of the pellet that makes the difference not the oil on the surface.
Shoot a round then clean the barrel and repeat with dry pellets.
Then compare results.
For those that have not tried lubing pellets yet, understand that the
amount of lube I use on pellets is almost undetectable… I put 6
drops of BreakFree in a zip lock bag, message the oil around to
completely coat the inside of the bag and then dump a tin of pellets in the
bag… I roll them around until I think they are all coated and then put
them back in the tin…
About 5,000 pellets ago the barrel was brand new and lapped with fine
valve grinding paste then polished with automotive compounding
paste…….. I have never cleaned a barrel and I have shot 25,000+
pellets without any signs of inaccuracy ever caused by a barrel not being
cleaned.. Others may have had different results….
The dry pellets I used were never oiled and have no excess oil on
them….. They came straight out of a brand new tin. There is only a
certain amount of preparation you can take in controlling the conditions
of these comparisons…. If anyone has the opinion that 50 dry pellets will
not remove the oil residue from the barrel then they are free to consider
the information as flawed and move on. Won’t hurt my feelings… I made
a conscious decision not to clean the barrel because I have no idea how
many pellets it would take to reseason the barrel (coat the barrel with
lead).. If I were to clean the barrel, the groups would or could be
completely erratic until the barrel returned to it’s original state therefore
adding one more control that could influence the results. <– still just
my opinion..I take as much care as I can to ensure that the results
are worth noting. I don’t have a vacuum to shoot in nor a sterile
enviroment to ensure oil free pellets nor anything else for that matter
and I think I make that very clear. These comparisons are real life
conditions that every airgunner could experience and only information
intended to give airgunners information that might save them the time
and effort of having to do the comparisons themselves….. All of my
information is posted so that the airgunner can decide for themselves
whether they want to use it or not….. I just choose to document some of
the information I gather while shooting and hope it will be of some use to
others…. I don’t post to prove a point or to determine whether something
is right or wrong….The information is there for all to use if they deam it
to be worthy…..The alternative is to keep it all to myself…. I welcome
you to do the comparison with a cleaned barrel so that we can compare
the results… I am looking forward to your results….
