Took a break from Airguns: Ruger 10-22 comes through!
While many might not be able to believe me, this weekend, I got back to my roots and drug out my Ruger 10-22. And I know a lot of you guys are familiar with that particular gun. Basically (short story), my Ruger 10-22 like many of you is tricked out. Its got a 1-9″ twist Green Mountain barrel as well as a Fajen Stock. There is also a lot of internal receiver parts that is aftermarket. Many of them with my own TUNING on them.
So back to the barrel, its a 1-9″ twist because years ago, I decided I wanted to solely shoot Sub Sonic ammo. For small game out to 125 yards, SS ammo is perfect in my opinion and it shoots flat and accurate. It also doesn’t destroy or overpower small game (IMO). A lot of my thinking/theory comes from Airgun Shooting. But that’s another topic for another day. The barrel was bought from EABCO the 1st year GM introduced the 1-9″ twist barrels. Its 20″ inches long and produces FPS OVER the advertised CCI rating of 1050 FPS. Out of my barrel, it does from 1085 up to 1105 FPS (max 104 fpe) which is still below super sonic. So the range is there with this barrel and ammo combo.
So off to hunt Ground Squirrels: I have to admit, I did bring along 1 of my Airguns….lol! Ummmm Ummmm (clearing my throat), this is about the 10-22 I swear.
Here is a hunt I did with Eric Mayer (. They pretty much popped out of the same hole and foraged for food in the same area. These squirrels were taken at 57 yards using the CCI SS ammo:
Here are another 2 that i got with the 10-22 a 50 yards EACH:
Here are 2 that i got this weekend.
This one was at 53 yards:
This one was at 76 yards:
Overall, I am a fan of SHOOTING period. But I have to admit, it was really nice to put the BB guns down and pick up one of my many powderburners. This lil .22 puts the game down with authority and it has plenty of accuracy to put the shots right into the vitals. Its also got enough range to hunt MOST small game. The CCI HP SS bullets have just about the widest HP of all 22 fodder and the lead is pretty soft compared…. When I hit these squirrels, and or rabbits, you can audibly hear the impact of the HP over other name brand 22 HP’s. And being a much quieter round aides in that sound :winkcamo:
Thanx for reading and …………………………I LOVE MY 10-22!

Nice shooting and nice write up as always Cedric. Does your action ever have a problem cycling with the SS rounds?
