Q:

Tool post height gauge

Made a height gauge for my lathe this evening. Will much simplify checking/setting up cutters when changing from one to another on the quick change. Takes just a moment to verify or set up correct height.

definitely a time saver.

Of course all you guys that have been doing this awhile probably already have one and know that already 😉

Thanks YN.

Yes, martin the index wheel is factory equipped.

Walt, mine is the piston type but I only have 2 standard tool holders (plus a parting tool holder and a knurling tool) so even though I have found them to index quite accurately, it is nice to be able to verify easily, plus saves a bunch of setup time when setting up a different cutter in the tool holder.

Where did you get the degree wheel thats mounts to your spindle?

Depends on which qc post you have. The piston type is supposed to be accurate to within a thousandth or so… the other one (forget the name, has a sliding gib on one side of the big dovetail) is a true copy of the Aloris system and is supposed to offer repeatability of tool height when you mount and dismount a holder, to within several millionths of an inch. But it costs more, even the Phase II chinese knock offs.

aloha,
walt

My luck and I’d be on the 39th machining operation out of 40, and last tool change to complete the project the one time that the qc tool holder did not allign properly and f$&# up an hours worth of work. 😯 👿

Thanks but I’ll use my quick check whenever I change tools, just to make sure. 😉

Same here. With the quick change you set a tool holder once and then forget it ).

Ummmm…… 🙄

You set your tool height adjust it and lock it down to that height. You should not have to check it again unless it moves off center. Which is not that common.

That is how mine works anyway.

WOK probably just sets the height when he first mounts or resharpens a tool, and then doesn’t worry about it again and doesn’t check the height when he changes tools.

I chuck up a dead center and use the point.

Good Idea!

This way when changing tools in the middle of a project I don’t have to mess with the workpiece or the tailstock. 😀

Really like the qc toolpost too. have several cutting tools ready to go, just unlock the cam, remove the tool complete with holder, install the new one and verify height with the gauge and lock the lever down. back to work.

Not my idea, wish i could take credit but saw it on a machinists forum a year or so while researcing different machines and saving up the money to buy something.

I chuck up a dead center and use the point.

Good Idea!
