Q:

Tool-post question.

I sent my top-slide to be fitted with a QCTP a couple of weeks ago and it came back with a boss that has about 3mm of play between it and the ID of the tool-post’s bore. It clamps down ok but I just wondered if a loose tolerance is normal or did they bodge the job? The original fitment was snug as you like. 😕

Are you sure your gibs do not need adjusting?

With the tool-post’s nut slackened off the tool-post can indeed move about. With the nut tightened it won’t move at all, though I haven’t tested it with any heavy cutting so far. I figured it didn’t require a snug fit as the tool-post doesn’t get rotated (indexable holders).

I’ve just left a message for the chap on Chester’s forum. I assumed it was normal, as I can’t see how it could be accidental. 😕

If it clamps down tight and doesnt move it is usable. It would bother me though, especially if I had paid someone to install it for me.

Possibly missing a part? maybe supposed to be a bushing between the tool post bore and the mounting shaft which was left out of the package. I’d call the folks you got the setup from, sounds like either missing a part or botched work; although hard to tell without seeing the part.
