Q:

Top hat slowing rotating

Hello guys, I’m new to the forum. I wanting to post this question because I have not found a definitive answer.

Is it normal for the Talon SS tophat to slowing rotate CCW when fired? I position the top hat set screws where I can see both of them while looking at the rifles right side. After 40 shots or so, the top hat has rotated CCW and I can now only see one top hat set screw on the right of the rifle. The other can now be see from the left side.

Now this does not seem to be changing my POI after it has rotated that far. I try and move the top hat with my hand and it is not loose. I think the stem of the tophat is spinning inside the hole where it goes. Has anyone else seen this?

Any answers will be greatly appreciated.

Here is a picture of my gun, TSS , 12 inch barrel, 6 inch TT shroud, TT brass hammer with slap mod, hawke 2-7 vantage scope on airforce tri-rail, Medium Rings.
Wokgard MK2 is on the way.

make a small mark from which you can align the screw hole and adjust as is necessary. (once tuned to your satisfaction)

the valve stem is very thin and the set screw CAN damage the threads if overly tightened… 😯

That’s a relief. Thanks for the reply.

If everything is turning (the valve and top hat together) That should not make any difference. Only if the top hat is moving and the valve is not than there would be a problem.

I read over my question and think I used the wrong terminology.
I am talking about the stem rotating inside the valve. Not the top hat rotating on the stem. Sorry! I have been into pcps for 2 years now, This is my first time reaching out to the air gunning community. its nice to get feedback from people that know more than I do. Thanks for your help!

Hi,

Unfortunately it is normal though it should not!
This tophat design is a bit flawed.

It is supposed to stay in place and if you screw it too tight you can crush it, or span the thread.
Some have used locktite on the screw thread, or you can use some on the hat thread.
Or some plumber tape sometimes helps on the tophat thread.

It is important for the tophat to be adjustable for tuning, but there are other solutions such as TT fixed tophat with inserts.
Or just a fixed tophat.

I have found that no matter what, the original AF tophat will come somewhat loose with shooting, a result of its design and the hammering on the thread that naturally pushed the tophat down and thus rotate.

Tinker with it but be careful, the stem is not as strong as it looks.

Welcome to the hobby.

Cheers
Chris
