Top hat trouble? Plus tank valve
I got a quick change top hat and some other goodies from Tony.
Before I startted swapping things out I found my original factory top hat was spinning loose. What caused that and would it affect accuracy? The first time I shot the gun outside it felt like the aim point was moving. Not sure; didn’t have time to check close.
Also, I got the tank adapter and now I realize I’m dead ended with a spin lock tank. Can I get a tank valve to install the tank adapter, or am I forced to buy an entire quick change tank?

It’s just the way they are. Poor design intended to allow power flexibility. But in your case as in mine you just want max power. Look through the forum posts on here which is full of examples of exactly the same problem you are having with the standard tophat. Just use the search.
The idea of the rubber Orings or shims behind the tophats is that you keep adding until they start to reduce your fps and that is the point you stop. Or just before. They act as a “poor man’s regulator” as often described and they also soak up some sound, which is an added bonus. You get more and more consistent shots and therefore also more accuracy by using them. You can get a big box of rubber Orings for a few dollars down your local hardware store. :fishinghole:

I also have a suppressor from Tony.
I was not aware during my purchase cycle conversations with Tony that extra washers or shims are needed
My goal is maximum velocity and accuracy and power.
I do not intend to use the top hat smaller inserts to reduce velocity. If I want a lower velocity .25 pcp I will simply use my highly accurate maurader with its very handy 8 shot rotary clip.
I bought Tony’s top hat specifically for the higher velocity.
The airforce factory top hat rotating so freely is a mystery. My gun is new and it seems weird for it to rotate. Does that mean something is loose (incorrect) with the original top hat?

I’d stick with Tony’s. People will tell you that the factory tophat can be secured with red loctite etc but I wouldn’t bother. The only downside of Tony’s is that it is loud, due to the fact it makes so much power, but that can be greatly reduced by adding the larger of the two inserts. That defeats the object for me as the price of a quieter gun is then a lot less power. So the best bet is Tony’s one piece tophat, no inserts and a couple of nylon washers or rubber Orings behind it to calm it down a bit. Tony also does Tophat shims for that exact purpose which are a few dollars and no doubt worth having. There are lots of ways to bring the noise of your gun down. Do one at a time so you know what is working and what isn’t and just keep going until you are happy. It might be that a quiet gun is not even a priority for you. It is for me as I like backyard friendly.

A loose tophat could affect velocity. The impact from the hammer loosened the tophat. I don’t know about the tank adapter.

Well this sucks.
I installed the quick change top hat and there is play in the bolt when closed.
Now I see top hat shims on Talon Tunes site to “experiment with limiting top hat travel.” So does this mean the factory top hat or for use with the quick change top hat?
Where exactly do the shims go? How do I know when it’s shimmed right?
I also found a reference to valve plugs. So now I know the answer to how to make my spin lock tank work with the tank adapter.
The stock I bought from Talon Tunes is very nice, but absolutely requires the tank adapter to use a scope.
Finally, after adding the shroud my shots are landing 3 inches low at a little over 10 yards. Ok given the scope is 3 inches above the pellet. I need to get somewhere with 50 yards clear to get this all sorted out.
