Q:

Trigger Guard madness

Cutting, milling, boring, milling etc. For those who use a mill you understand. For those who don’t believe me doing these types of cuts is a pain in the ass…LOL.

A few picts of several hours work. 😀

I remember reading one of my machinists handbooks once where there was a hundred different oils used to see which one actually cut the best with the least amount of effort..on the top of the list..whale blubber oil.. 😆

good quality gunsmithing taps can be busted with a punch and then finish taping the hole…most of the time anyways…… be sure to use the 1-2 turns and the back turn..stanless can be a pain…

Sweet tip, I will try that. I know the cobalt is very brittle. I already do most of the other tips posted. I was out of good cutting fluid though and the tap was far from new ie sharp (. I usually cut about a 1/4 turn and then back a 1/2 turn to clear it.

Thanks guys.

Speaking of tapping, I just had a tap break in a stainless part I was making for my pumping machine. I can remake the part but it really pisses me off. I dont know if its some crappy material or Im not using the correct cutting fluid but cutting threads in this material is being a huge pain in the ass. Any suggestions?

Try and use ti coated taps and if you can find some of the old tap magic before they made them take the good stuff out it will really help, I like to use gun taps when possible, if possible.. they shoot the chip out the bottom of the hole, also, you need to stop after a turn or two back it up half a round to break the chip. If you dont the chips will clog up and make the tap break..

Hey Walter, I think WOK may be one of those clean freaks… 😉

Use only the very best taps and good cutting fluid. Drill holes for 75% threads. Used taps may be dull and pile up in there. Once you have used a tap you will get a feel for how many holes it can do before tossing it.
I use ‘Walter’ taps when I can get them 🙂
Quality cannot be replaced when tapping tough stuff.

The hand tapper is a Gods Send.

After tapping literally hundreds of holes with a wrench I did the hand to the forehead thing and went to Graingers and had them get it for me. They are not the cheapest but I did not have to pay for shipping.

I am eyeing the mini tapper also. I probably pick one up when I go to littlemachineshop.com next time.

WOK, now that’s more like it 🙂 teehee

I have one of those tappers…. I love it. so much so I bought the mini-tapper as well. Have not tried it out yet as my bench is too busy errrr messy I mean.
Keep making those chips!!!
Wish you every success on your venture
Walter….

Voltar

You should see the floor…LOL

I have an air compressor that I constantly use to keep the area clear of swarf, or I would be up to my eyebrows in it

As for the hand tapper. That is dedicated at the moment to a 10-32 tap for all those damn holes in the Wokbutts. It has never even been used for anything else.

These pics make me very very suspicious regarding what actual work WOK does in his shop!!!!!!
Note: no chips on machine…….
tapping guide with no taps in the holders…….
no chips on tapping machine……..
all these things have me convinced that WOK farms out all his work ‘that Americans won’t do……..’

BTW keep up teh good work WOK 🙂

Walter…

psshh..I can do one of them with a single push of a button… 😆 😆
but on the other hand I dropped about 37k on my mill 😆 😆 😆
Nice..love to see pics like these!! post more!!

😯 Is that a “Normal” amount of money to invest? Or is that a “top of the line” all the bells and whistles type?

Not sure if its normal or not..I didnt do much checking around before I bought it.. its a 3 axis CNC Bridgeport..I have used Bridgeports for 25 years and wouldnt consider any other mill..So when I wanted a new on that’s what I ordered.. I have been in shops that had Laguns, supermax, southbend, and every other mill there is and many times i see them with the head taken off laying on a pallet waiting for some more plastic gears to go back in..They are like everything else..If you make a living with them you get what you pay for..and cant afford to have crappy tools.. 😉
