Finally an ambition achieved! My HW80 .22 cal,V-Mach tuned with shortened and moderated barrel.Only 11.5 fpe (UK) but at least it’s silent and smooth.

will post results when I’ve had a zero session on the range this weekend.

We are restricted by law to 12 fpe, unless we apply to the police for a firearms certificate,as air arms over that power are deemed “dangerous”.

So most manufacturers sell thier guns at around 11.5 or even less to avoid litigation. In continental Europe some countries have a lower limit, some higher. In France you cannot use air for hunting.

(Hunters using air rifles have long been used to using this relatively low power so accuracy and consistency count for more than power. Our legal quarry is rabbits, brown rats, grey squirrels, crows, magpies, and pigeons)

Anyhow, airgun tuners have been going since it all kicked off in the UK with the appearance of the HW35,this was in the 70s.Some engineer enthusiasts near Birmingham found that by applying engineering practises to the internals of these German springers they could dramatically increase the power.By careful gunsmithing they could improve the accuracy,so VENOM was born.

I’ll just add that my barrel is unchoked,it just has a target crown.

A bit of a ramble, just giving you some background to our air gun laws!

That’s a nice shooter. I have heard great things about dropping the power down on the R1’s…..HELL YOU GOT ME THINKING!!!!!

Only had 30 minutes to zero rifle.

1st group,3 shots 4mm centre to centre.

2nd group,opened up 7mm c-c. 3 shots.

Confirm group to shoot 1″ high @ 25 yds.10 shots plus 2 flyers that I called.13 mm edge to edge.

All at 25 yds prone.Bushnell 4-12 x 40 Trophy,great hunting optics.
Pellets Air Arms Diabolo Field 5.52 mm/16 grain.
Crosman Accupel shot well too but I can get AAs easier.

I’m very happy with this performance, any errors were down to me,not the rifle.

I’m a big fan of the low powered super-accurate springers. I bought an R7 and tuned it. Man, that rifle is soooo fun to shoot. If you miss, you are the problem, plain and simple.

When you get back, please post how good it shot. If you’re not happy with its performance, I’ll offer you an old Barfska scope in trade. 😆

Yes I think Beeman call them R1s when they import them from Germany.

I’ve had this for years in it’s original guise but I always remembered the VONOM HW80 I owned in the 90s.It was a superb gun,top class walnut stock, mirror bluing, silent and smooth.I had to sell it when I lost my job, regretted it ever since.

Got this rifle in a swap for an old Leupold scope.
As for the improvements,if you have a certificate over here I think you can get about 28fpe and V-Mach are the experts on springer performance.
V-Mach is run by the son of the guy who ran VENOM,which went out of business.Had to wait over six months to get the thing into his shop for the upgrade.
Stock is walnut. Thanks for the offer,I’m hoping to keep this one! 😆
I’m off to the range this morning for zeroing and accuracy testing.

Bob

Nice! So that’s like an R1 on hormone pills? 😕

When you grow tired of it, give me a shout. I’ll help you find it a home in my safe. Is it beech? Nice grain, but seems too light for walnut.
