Valve mod. on my Talon tank

I did the valve mod. in the quick reference section on my tank. I am pleased with the mod. except for the amount of air it uses. I have an 18 inch barrel. My tank was shooting JSB 15.9g pellets at 860fps and using 10psi per shot now it is shooting them at 965fps and using 23-24psi per shot. 😯 Is that alot for the power I am getting? I used the 15.9g just to see the increase in velocity and plan on using Kodiaks for more power. Since the 15.9s are a light .22 pellet are they wasting air?

It’s all good. Most folks don’t know what to expect. That’s because most folks think that power is a linear thing. Meaning that if you add a little more effort (air), you’ll get more power in the same ratio. Unfortunately, that isn’t the way things work.

For instance: want a stereo that is twice as loud as the 10 watt per channel premium sound system that came with the car? You’ll need 100 watts per channel to do that. Want a stereo 4 times as loud as that 10W/CH system? That’ll take 1000W per channel! Makes the decision between 10 and 12 watts per channel a little different than if you thought the 2 extra watts bought you 20% eh?

While stereos might actually get somewhere with an extra watt or two when it comes to dynamic range etc., airguns have just one output criteria (besides accuracy) and a 10% increase in “power in” is not going to give you a 10% increase in “power out.”

Same with hot rods and time slips, if double the power made you twice as fast…well, we’d be looking at some crazy speeds these days!

That’s not a lot of air for the power you are getting. It takes a LOT more air to make a little bit more power. You’re making more than a little bit more power than before. And remember, you’re measuring the power AFTER all the inefficiencies are multiplied on the way to getting the pellet out of the gun. BTW, if you’re going to switch pellets, do it now and then tune the gun. If you spend time tuning and then switch pellets, you’re bound to be disappointed as you will need to tune again.

I shot some more with the 15.9g JSBs only and it was using 21.5psi per shot.

Yes I probably could reduce the PW and still get that velocity or at least very close. The reason I don’t want to touch the PW is because my other tank is getting 40 shots within a 25fps spread(JSB 15.9g starting at 870 going up to 890 and back down to 865). I was shooting several different weights of pellets at the time so I could see what kind of speeds I was getting. I will shoot a string with all 15.9g JSBs and see what I get.

Edit* I was thinking you wre on Kods. Surprised you using that much on the light stuff. Heavier pellets hold the valve open a tad longer. Can you reduce PW and keep the same speeds?

if you were using a regulated set up you would be using 2000 – 2200 psi per shot for the same fps so it looks good to me
