Vulcan Tube failure
Guys
seen a few posts on FB showing a catastrophic tube failure on a vulcan, the groups are all closed so i can’t link to them, they contain 3 pictures but no information concerning the failure – Egveny is aware and looking into this concerning incident, my gut feeling is this a fill to fail destruction test but with no information so we can only make assumptions which is not helpfull at all,

Probably it’s the “Intensive Care” application….
Last pictures I saw about a PCP air-cylinder failure was a guy having lost some fingers and an eye and being in Intensive Care for several weeks.

I had a look at fakebook, publishing pictures and zero explanation is just plainly wrong. It was definitely during filling the cylinder because there is a non original fill probe with O2 compatible o rings visible there. cant see any filling equipment though. a bit weird.
the tube seems to have split not only along the “seams” but multiple times so I think it was an explosion, maybe oil or stuff like that as lubricant.
I don’t think they hand pumped it to 400bar hahaha
it seems to be an older model looking at the stock.
this must be the new way of degassing the air cylinder, I see. the ventholes should go definitely into the shroud!
Did Hoot drill vent holes in the wrong tube?
Evgeny tests every cylinder to 400 bar. There has to be more to this story.
I’m not an expert in this field , and my opinion really means little . However , I do know that wall material thickness
is very important . Maybe in this case the thickness of this tube failure may have been due to a less than tube wall
thickness needed in order for the pressure applied to work properly ? .

This is concerning. Odd there’d be no information on it. :confusedn:
PCPs are nice but THEY ARE ALL DANGEROUS!
Please always remind there is a 200-300 bar bomb sitting right in front of your face.
Air cylinders should be regularily inspected and tested and some manufacturers require them to be replaced every ten years.
So far we don’t know the reasons and circumstances for the failure but it’s always good to remind safety and danger awareness when handling pcps.

That is well above the max spec fill pressure for a Vulcan.
I wonder if he went even higher than in the picture. Add some poor reassembly (was taken apart to get it into China), wrong grease, or oil in the air supply and kaboom.
