watch your back… yard
My backyard has a small clearing and then there are woods on all sides. There is a little stream that runs through it and beside the stream I set up a bird feeder. We have a few cardinals and robins that are great fun to watch. The problem is that the squirrels can get into the bird feeder. As a matter fact, they get into everything, including the attic. I had an old copper grounding rod that is probably five or 6 feet long. Maybe a half-inch in diameter. I have the bird feeder hanging from that, but the squirrels quickly figured out how to climb up that narrow little rod and belly up to the bird feeder. I can generally dispatch the squirrels quite easily from the kitchen window. The problem is, I’m usually not at the kitchen window. So, I purchased a Foscam IP camera. I can now keep an eye on the feeder remotely. They even have an app for the iPhone. Little saboteurs. I see one coming now…

That’s a cool idea.
Bird feeder defense is not practical in my neighborhood, so I put waterproof grease on my bird feeder pole. I feel like it helps and it’s fun to watch the bandits try to climb up the slippery pole.
It does the heart good to hear you are “dispatching” the rodents, rather than solely enriching their diet so they can breed more rodents.
Perhaps it’s irresponsible to even sell bird feeders without including an air rifle, blowgun, etc.
Id like to see a ring of electric fence, about 4 in. diam., just below the bird feeder, insulated over that grounding rod

I electrified my bird feeder off the horse fence, using some 1/2 hardware cloth.
This way there’s no way the little buggers can get onto the feeder without getting hit with about 1800V, its funny as hell seeing the rats get zapped, makes them mad as all get-out! :rofl:
